That usually means built in Melbourne in 1946. Post some pics as soon as you can, to confirm that dating. Warren

That number could be 1930's or 1960's depending on all sorts of other things.
The 61/62 under the BB is probably a casting number, nothing to do with serail number.
Where is the number 24283 stamped?
Photos needed.

I assume that the Australs with this form of serial number were made side by side with Malvern Stars. This would make your 5M 20345, built in 1945, in Melbourne. Can you post some photos, or description of features of the frame please. Warren

Just had a look at other Austral numbers that I have recorded in with Malvern Star numbers.

Up until the prefix numbers, say 1940 onwards, (1M xxxx) they dont seem to line up with the Malvern Star numbers at all. Once M Star went to the prefix numbering system, the australs seemed to have done so as well.

Pre 1940, the australs do seem to comply with some numeric sequence of their own though!

I have recorded the following Austral numbers:

3128 Road racer 1935/6
10833 (yours) Roadster, rear- pressed ends, front- brazed in roadster ends. 1936?
12682 Club racer C1936
12741 Road racer C1936

I have dated the above from lugs and ends, being similiar to equivalent year for Malvern Star models with identical features.

If yours was a Malvern Star roadster, with those fork ends and lugs, and BSA parts, I would have said it was mid 1930's, regardless of what the number was.

I believe that your austral was built in the Malvern Star factory, and if you substituted the maps with stars, it would be identical, right down to the paint colours and scheme, and about 1936.

Thanks Warren,
My guess when I picked up the bike, was mid 30's ish, based on the look and BSA components.

I had a quick search for 30's model Malvern Stars and found this post that you've contributed to.
They do look very similar. My bike also has the faint line pin striping as seen on this MS.

Mine has a Favorit Coaster hub and KAGA 28 x 3/8 rim on the rear and an Araya rim on the front... My guess is these wouldn't have been standard?

Hi Warren,

I was wondering if this old clunker iv'e had sitting in the shed for a while might be an old Malvern Star. Somehow I'd never looked close enough to see that it had a faint "M" on the seat tube in the style of the MS font. Serial number appears to be "8004" and located at the top of the seat tube.

Regards

Jason

Jason: The 'M' font on your bike was used by many manufacturers, as you could buy those 'letters of the alphabet' individually, and apply them to create your own brand. These letters had that font. Can you very carefully rub some more of that red primer off to reveal some more letters? Or wet it and look for outline of letters? Try 2000 wet and dry, or 'extra cut' car polish?
I dont think that your bike is a malvern Star, but it is a nice old bike.
Aaron: The wheels on the Austral sound like mid 1960's or later, when japanese made rims started to come in. The favorit coaster brake would be from the 1960's or 70's.

Hello Everyone, I am fairly new to this but I scoured the site and couldn't find anything that helped me with my issue. I have a Malvern Star 5 Star that was given to me and I am desperately trying to find some information about it before selling or fixing it up to make sure I am not wasting my time. The bike is in fairly good condition considering it's age and was set up with a front and back derailleur and flip flop hub despite having track dropouts. I can't, however, decipher the serial number. It features on the left hand rear forks and doesn't appear to follow the standard naming - in fact, front what I can read, it features a 'G', which I haven't come across before. The bike, to my knowledge, used to belong to the late Jack Walsh. I have taken some photos which you can find here: http://s836.photobucket.com/user/mischasteen/library/
any information/assistance would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
Mischa

Can you post a better photo of the head lugs and fork crown please. And, you might be able to scrape off or scrape out paint to reveal the serial number a bit clearer.
That is not original paint, and they are not original decals, so no harm will be done if you scrape off a bit of paint. From the average photos, I am guessing it is a late 1940's production 5 star, a semi racer. They are not 'track' ends, they are just the ends that Malvern Star and just about everyone else used in their production frames.
Is there a serial number on the steerer tube of the forks?

Here is a couple of photos of the head lugs and crown forks, they aren't spectacular as I'll have to go back to my folks place to look at the bike again. Will try out the scraping idea and check for a steerer tube serial then as well. Will keep you posted. Crazy to think the thing is three times my age, particularly as it seems very light and, with a bit of love, eminently ridable. Thanks for your help.

Ok, it looks like it has the 'square shoulder' where the head fitting cups drop into the head lugs, which could mean that it is an early 5 star, say 1939-41. Which would mean it is the top model from that time, not the 'semi racer' of later 5 star production.
It is hard to tell just from photos.
The frame number for a 1939 5 star would typically be 6 digits, starting with a '1'. eg. 1xxxxx.
Your 'G' may be a number, not stamped very well?
If it was one of Jack Walsh's actual race bikes, it may have been made in Sydney for him, and the number may not conform to this sequence.

Helleo Warren. I found an old malvern star womens bike in a clean up pile. Would be cool if it was the same year as my birthday, 1957. it has a number on the rear fork. The number is stamped clearly and neatly. It is 151C1. I cannot stand seeing things going to waste. This is times gone by and I love old things that still work. Thanking you kindly, Keith.

Ladies or gents? Stars in fork crown? Pressed ends? Clip head? Paint scheme? Brand of components?

Number alone is not enough to date a Malvern Star, but it could be 1933/34.
