S262, is not the serial number, sounds like the casting number of the BB shell. Check the left side of the seat lug, the right hand rear fork end, or on the fork steerer, (you will have to take the forks out to view that one.)

Are the stars in the head within the head lugs, in an open head? Swap over to Facebook, and post some photos!

Hello,
Hoping someone can help date an old Malvern Star. The only number I can find on it is 905 just under the seat post and it is stamped Brampton England under the crank case. I can’t seem to post a photo.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone, newbie here. i recently picked up 2 malvern stars from a clearing sale (in Eromanga, QLD - furthest town from the sea in Australia of all places  ) one is a mens looking one with turny-upped handle bars (serial number 23725). the other is a womens looking one that still has the 'roadstar' decal on it in bad shape though. only number i can find looks like a sticker rather than an embossed on the lower BB which is 'B 75345' so guessing its not as old as the other? just after anyone to give me a rough idea of years/models and if they are worth having a go at restoring. paid $5 for the both so im hardly financially invested in them...

thanks, Damo

Where is the #23725 number stamped on the frame?

Gday, I have a 4 star fixed gear track bike, serial numbers 296 on rr fork. Looks like an X stamped on crankcase. My grandfathers name is hand painted on frame. Have no wheels as all 8 of them were stolen from dads shed a few years ago. It seems extremely lightweight...molybdenum???
In very bad shape unfortunately. I would really appreciate any info you may have. Thanks. Matt.
I have tried several times yer again to add photos but can’t figure it out. Sorry.

Hi there,

I have a Malvern Star 5 star track frame which I am keen to find an estimated year of manufacture.
The numbers on the rear fork are 7667 (running down the lug), with 54 running across the lug, perpendicular to the first 7.

I am guessing 1954.

I would appreciate any information on the frame, as this frame holds sentimental value to me.

Thanks in advance...

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum. I have recently come across a complete and ride-able Malvern Star 5 Star. The serial number is SX396** stamped on the inside of the rear left drop out (Can't read the second to last digit accurately, and left the last digit out for anonymity).

I'd be curious as to what date the frame would have come from? I am in Adelaide and would image the bike would have been built locally but am unsure.

Overall the bike looks pretty tired for its age and appears to have been covered over in red house paint at some stage in it's life. I would like to try an clean it up/restore it however also do not want to ruin any of it's originality (I think some of the original paint and decals are under the red house paint)

I have more photos if anyone is curious to see them

Note: I have no intention to sell the bike, it belonged to a now deceased family member and I intend to keep and ride it.

Need better photos, and more of them, but my guess is built in Adelaide between 1946 and 1949. Are there two stars on either side of the fork crown? Are the rear fork ends doubled up (twice as wide as normal). Is the prefix SX, because you don't want to reveal the second digit, or is it actually an X.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

See Below, if there is anything specific you want me to photograph let me know
Are there two stars on either side of the fork crown?

Yes (see photo)
Are the rear fork ends doubled up (twice as wide as normal).
Not as far as I can tell (see photo)
Is the prefix SX, because you don't want to reveal the second digit, or is it actually an X.
The second digit is actually an 'X'

I think I'll have to dismantle and clean it up a bit, I'm in two minds about what to do with the paint. I suspect the original paint underneath is missing in places which is probably why the red paint was used to cover it up. As much as I would like to keep any remnants of original paint, I also want to prevent the frame from rusting, so perhaps having it blasted and resprayed is a better option overall. I might try cleaning the frame with a solvent (kerosene?) that will at least remove the grime and maybe/hopefully some of the red paint.

The rear hub is a Renak coaster brake, the other caliper brakes look strange to me, almost as if someone has bent them to fit the bike.

The pedal cranks are 155mm which to me seems short for a frame this size

I have bot seen the two star in either side of the fork crown before.
I have not seen the large holes in each star like that either. The stars are normally pinned through the middle, to hold them in place for brazing. It would have been quite difficult to braze them on without pins.
The front hub is a pre-war Airlite, with riveted flange. A very rare hub.
Yes, the front brake calipers has been bent to suit.
The TDC (TD Cross) head fittings are a typical late 1940's early 1950's fitment.
Obviously a labour of love, a very special 5 Star frame. The sort of frame that a frame builder would build fir himself, a fellow employee, or for a bike shop owner who was prepared to pay fir the extra hours involved.

The cranks, rear hub, stem, probably bars, are much later additions.

Thanks for the info. I read somewhere that the Adelaide frames were a bit more ornate with regard to the lug work and forks crown stars etc. I have no idea who would have swapped the cranks, rear hub, stem, and bars but seeing as the bike is currently functional I might just try to clean it up as best as I can with the existing parts and potentially chase down some period specific parts in the future.

Is anyone able to point me in the right direction regarding information on how to tidy up a bike like this without negatively impacting upon the significance of an old Australian frame?

If that number is on the rear fork, it is more likely to be 1960 something ish.

More information required please. What does the frame look like. Ladies, Gents, Other? Size? Where are the stars, if any? What do the decals look like? Photo would be even better. Where is the number? Pressed ends, club ends? Type of rear dropout?

6P125: as per previous posts, I need more info, preferably some photos, but 6P will probably means 1946, built in Perth, particularly if you found the bike in WA. So, if you can't supply a photo, details of lugs, pressed ends or club ends, stars in fork crown? Etc etc.

Warren I believe I may have a pre 1930 Malvern Star Bicycle there is only one number on the bike and it is under the crank bearing housing 3 digits 046 and 1 star on the front of the goose neck bearing housing, it has old pressed rims and pressed tube ends on the rear wheel mounting as well as the mudguard with reflector the hubs have little oil cups for lubrication. I have written to Malvern star and sent photos and am awaiting their response.
