Good day. I need help in identifying this bike. 604197 is engraved in the seat tube. I really want to restore this to its original looks. Thank you.

Hi

I have just purchased a malver star with Bruce Small Pty Ltd on the frame, it has 2 stars onto front and one either side on forks. Only number I coul find was on the frame where back wheel attaches and no is 9 6042, it is green and cream with red writing and stars. Could you please help me in working out what age it could be, I have spent hours online and think it may be 50 or 60s.

Thank you so much.

Not a Malvern Star,I’d suggest you start a “star” thread .
Ps when you do take better photos and photos of detail things like the rear fork ends ....

My mother has recently given me her dad's old Malvern and from what I can tell the serial number near the seat post reads 2RL24. Can anyone here tell me what model of Malvern Star it is and when it was made. The only information I can get off the bicycle frame is the faint faded words "Malvern Star". My hopes are to restore it back to working order.

Posting images is a bit tricky until you get the hang of it. You were close but needed to include the “.jpg” at the end of the url

2RL24: I strongly suspect that this is not the factory serial number. Check the rear fork ends for Another number. This is a highly modified bike (obviously), with the forks from a moped or small motor cycle. A common enough modification, and in this case, very crudely executed.

Hi Jason
Welcome to the forum, hopefully you've read the posting that explains what this forum is about and why it's frustrating when 1-Post only questions pop up that potentially seek to simply prepare ads for sale. However I did look at your Insta photo and was both excited and deeply concerned. Let me explain:

The excitement part
From the (only) photo (can you please post more thanks), it seems you might have a very early Malvern Star in incredible original condition. We need pictures of the front lugs (with the stars) and the serial number (is it on the top of the seat-post?) to tell more thanks. Then if it's genuine you're very very lucky, as it's something your great-grandfather might have ridden.

The deep concern
A lot of people who find or purchase an old bike don't necessarily know how to sympathetically restore them or realise the significance of what they have. As a vintage bicycle collector, I'd be rich for every old bike that has been utterly ruined by powdercoating, having holes drilled for brakes, removing original paint schemes and fitting modern parts. Your Insta reply to @advanlevack says your other bike is waiting for a Chinese bottom bracket.

So to be very clear, you can only ruin an old bike once. Then it's gone and wrecked forever.

This frame you've acquired needs appropriate vintage parts and no modern upgrades. And its current patina respected. In light of this, what are your plans for it?

Because to be frank if it's going to ruin the history then I would please suggest offering it for sale to members on this forum who have the experience, parts and desire to preserve it as it should be. And in the interests of being upfront, I for one would be keen.

Thanks for your reply. Here is a link for more detailed pictures.

I've no plans for it yet, you're welcome to make an offer for it as I'm not that attached to it and would love to see it in the hands of someone who has the resources to restore it.

You can email me any further queries to

Vintage Malvern Star.
Hi. I’ve got a very old bike in good complete condition and was of course wondering it’s approximate age. It has a 4 digit number under the seat ( 8255 )
Thanks in advance

Hi,

I doubt this is pre-1930s but maybe someone here would know roughly how old this bike is?

There's a couple of stickers still on it, one says something about Dynalloy, the other I think says TI Industries Footscray. Gonna try to restore it (with the help of our local bike shop :P)

Hi Warren

I picked up a ladies Malvern star on weekend, bought it mainly for the wheels, but now havent got the heart to dismantle it now and would much prefer to keep it as is..

Serial number looks to be 79430.... not 100% sure if the first seven is a seven as it looks to have a sweeping action to it and not a 45 degree angle to it...

The bike to me looks 20's-30's in style 28in.... it has BSA crank and peddles, Eadie coaster back hub.... the sloping down tube shows the Malvern star name in white with a shadowing affect to name

Thank you

Sorry a couple of things i forgot to mention

Its a 2 star, has a slotted seat tightening screw bolt, and seat tube has a rounded blind end top, so water can not get into tube from under seat....
Head stem only has one bolt for tightening handlebars and tightening into fork tube....

I have great trouble trying to apply pictures, can i send them to someone to post for me please...

Cheers

Does it have stars in the fork crown? Where is the serial number located?

Serial number on seat lug. Left side if sitting on bike. Yes stars on forks.

Also BSA front hub.

# 79430 = 1936/37, and the features you have mentioned are consistant with this date. Are the main bar decals block letter style or scroll style?

The main bar decals are sort of block shaped, they are a thinish lettering with a shadow affect thus making them look about 10mm thick and blurring.
I hope that make some sense.

It does have a 1930's look to it.

Thank you very much.

I also noticed that the lower bearing housing on the head stem lug below the bottom star and above the fork crown is square shaped and not bell shaped as on later model bikes.

This is a feature I know to be on early model bikes with BSA fittings

Cheers

Just bought myself a Malvern star exercise bike, this is a genuine 2 star made by Malvern star.

I have 2 lots of serial number from it, is there a chance you can please give an estimate of age.

23972 stamped on seat post tube .

2 star factory frame 4189 stamped on rh dropout.

Cheers

Not sure about serial numbers on Malvern Star exercise bikes, but they must have made and sold heaps of them, they are like belly buttons..... Two on eBay at the moment. A nicely made bike, excellent for getting some exercise on these cold nights.

Just looked on EBay. Only one I could find but not the same style.

Can't for the life of me get any pictures to load, but if you put in Malvern star exercise bicycle on google a couple will come in images.

I found one picture of a lady in 1962 on a bike exactly the same.
