bicyclepassion wrote:5 star 21813: Frame number under bottom bracket is unusual, but probably just means it is a custom 5 star, and probably not built at the Malvern Star factory. I wouldn't be surprised if this is an earlier frame, (early 1950's) rebuilt/re configured in the early 1960's. The Headfittings, brakes, paint colour and scheme, and small scroll decals all suggest early 1960's.
Most of the custom road bikes by the 1960's had cast Campagnolo, or similar, fork ends by then.
Pull the forks out and see if there is another number stamped on the steerer tube. Have a look on the steerer, and under the crown race, for evidence of previous paint and maybe a different colour.
Have a look for a date code under the seat (If it is a Brooks). (Not that that will be conclusive for dating the frame).
Have a look inside BB shell for evidence of previous paint.

It seems oldish, but the star is a plastic stick on the same as seen in the 80's. i spent some time removing the remnants of a previous rattle can paint job. Lugs are all fairly plain, bottom bracket oiler has a flip top lid. Rear wheel has Sachs coaster brake hub. 22 tooth cog i think. Trying to decide of i should just chuck back on the wheels and seat, source some bars and ride it, or rebuild as a cruiser.
Edit: sorry, just realised this ' s probably the wrong thread as i don't have a serial number. Any tips on lifting a faint serial number like this?

I have a couple frames the same and they are 67/68 vintage but skidstars with that paint style were made into the early 70's. Skidstars normally had 3 speed rear wheels. The serial number is next to the rear wheel drop out, drive side.Arreis wrote:Can anyone help with this skidstar frame? I can't find any serial numbers, it looks like the BB had a number at some stage but it's now illegible.

Decal kits are being developed for the restoration of these skidstars.

Thanks. I couldn't see a SN near the dropout, but i'll have a closer look.maccayak wrote:I have a couple frames the same and they are 67/68 vintage but skidstars with that paint style were made into the early 70's. I am not sure about this one, but my impressions are:
Made in Japan?
A lot later than 1957.
Rear brake bridge would suggest 1970's.
Someone else jump in for this one please, its outside of my Malvern Star knowledge.
Warren.

Does it have an '0' in front of it, as in 03805.
In any case it will be a semi racer, not a track bike, long ish wheelbase, normal bike tubing, not 531, and usually drilled for brakes.
Probably built between 1960 and 1964.

There's no 0 in front of the number, just the 4 digits & yes, it's drilled for brakes.
Thanx again for ur quick reply.

1 is the year (for a MS produced in the 1940s)bsaboy wrote:thank you for that Tinker so 1M is Melbourne and serial number 8304 = 1941
cool thanks for that..!!
M is for a Melbourne manufacture
8304 is the frame number (presumably for Melbourne builds) for that year.
