Picked up an old MS frame with P5201 serial number. P indicates it was made in Perth as I understand. Not sure if pre 1930? How old would you say it is? Photos can be seen at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/197 ... P6201.docx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the serial number looks like 25 524. it has two stars on the front and he says the gears are a rare french three speed with derailment.
any clues?

25 524 would then seem to possibly be from around 31-32.

#51984. Delivery bike with integral basket. I sold this bike to Fox studios some years ago. Good to see it again. I believe it is 1935 production. It came to me as a bare frame and fork, in red oxide primer. I added those wheels to it just so it was a rolling bike. It would have had heavier 28" rims originally, and probably an Eadie coaster. They were going to use it in 'Australia' the movie, as a prop. I dont think it was rideable when i sold it to them. I sold them about 5 or 6 bikes for the movie. I watched the movie very closely, but none of the bikes appeared at all, or not that I noticed, and I can spot an old bike in a movie and not notice anything else at all!
#69637. Number would suggest 1936. Maybe it was second hand when purchached in 1939?
#17478. Number Vertical on rear dropout. This is a 1960's bike. The number under the bottom bracket doesnt mean anything.
6M 17592. Yes, 1946. Great bike. Has the 'fancy S' Malvern Star decal, so is almost certainly original paint.
I went back through the thread, if I have missed anyone, please repost your question here.

P 5201. I haven't deciphered the early Perth numbers. I think I can make out stars in the fork crown in your photos. It has all the frame features of a 'made in Melbourne' Deluxe roadster, from the mid 1930's. The deluxe roadster used the BSA type lugset for the chainstays and seatstays, and BSA parts. The stars in the fork crown were first mentioned in the 1933 catalogue. My guess is 1934 to say 1937 model.
# 25524. Probably 1932. Photos will help. What size wheels? What kind of rear fork ends? Is chain oiler on seat bar or right hand seat stay? Are the forks original? Is the serial number repeated on the forks?

Cheers Warren. Great to have some back story to the bike and also that we don't need to watch the movie!bicyclepassion wrote: #51984. Delivery bike with integral basket. Resized teaser shot. That's an LP cover in the background to give you an idea of the size. (The red thing is a ~30cm square piece cardboard for you kids oblivious to LPs)
Serial number is 1P89 The with the last 9 slightly questionable.
Link to an album ---> here. It is best viewed by clicking on "Full Screen" in the bottom right hand corner that the link takes you to.
Sorry for the lightly fuzzed pics. With my love/hate relationship with technology, I only buy the cheapest & nastiest Smart Phones
When the weather picks up locally the owner said he'd be happy for me to come around and take some more happy snaps of some of his other MS curiosities. He believes he may even have a frame from prior to them being even branded with Stars..... so mid 1920s or earlier, possibly? Any details in particular I should look for beyond the usual? (I'll take a better camera as well!)

The story is that it belonged to Ellis Bankin, a Victorian schoolteacher who in the early 30s organised the "Mallee Boys" bike rides. He was the teacher at a one-teacher school in the Mallee (far NW Victoria) and organised a group of his and other students to ride to Melbourne and visit the seaside. It got lots of media coverage at the time. (The Herald and the Argus later sponsored them). My father was a 16yo schoolboy from Melbourne and he and a couple of mates took part as a guides for the inaugural ride - in about 1930. We recently followed the route and highlights included spending the night at Best's winery at Stawell.
At the end of the tour, Bankin gave my dad his bike - this Malvern Star with the serial number 25524. It has two stars on the crown above the forks ... no stars on the forks and has two sets of gears on the rear wheel - a single drive wheel on one side and three gears on the other with a Cyclo twin-wire derailleur. Dad - now 97 - got the riding bug and rode from Melbourne to Sydney and return in 1934 - up the Hume and back down the Pacific Highway following the coast. The front forks still bear the scars from being run off the road going down Bulli Pass. He says the Cyclo gears were very advanced for the time (??).
Dad hung the bike up in his brother's shed in 1948 when he went to England for a couple of years and it stayed there until last year, when I recovered it.
Surprisingly nothing appears rusted solid, and it has been easy to take bits apart, but I am not getting too adventurous until I have scoped out what needs to be done.
The plan at this stage is a full mechanical restoration, but I am thinking I will leave it cosmetically much as I can as is.
Sadly, Bankin died in 1936, riding his Triumph motorbike from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock. There is quite a bit about him - he was well known as an adventurer and had previously taken his bike across the Nullabor to Perth and rode around the SW of the state at a time when it would have been a pretty rough track to follow. Dad still talks about opening and closing gates on the Hume Highway when he did his bike ride. But i have never been able to discover if my leg is being pulled or not.
The bike is now with me in Sydney, and I am looking for someone who can give me an assessment of the works ahead. Re spoking is definitely needed (some are floppy and others are tight) and as you can see, it still has the original tyres!!

I would suggest you create a separate thread. The bike and the story warrant it.

Hi guys just wondering if anyone can help me if this old bike. It s my pops old bike he used to ride to work on, my Nan was going to throw it to the tip before I rescued it. Planning on restoring it to its former glory. It has 2 stars on the fork tube. It has serial no S239 on right side of seat tube, and 59591 with I think a h or r on the left side of seat tube. Any help on what type it is and what age it might be would be much appreciated.
Cheers Tony

I have a few Malvern stars now about 10 and about 30 other aussie made bikes.
Malvern Star Serial nos here a few that you may be able to date for me
5 Star Road cyclo benelux drop outs, made in England on BB, only serial no is on forks steerer tube 13710X
5 Star Road serial no. on rld is NS 5385
4 Star Track serial no. on rrd is 22661
4 Star Track serial no. on bb is 63/63 3365 (which suggests 1963) , I have a MS exercise bike which has 61/62 on BB
1 Star Track serial no. on rrd 154829
Someone said to me MS without serial no's were made for Olympic riders, Is this Correct ?
OPPY BIKES , I have a 3 Star Track serial no on rrd 43B 5434 also has OPPY stamped on both rear dropouts..Is this the standard MS stamping for OPPY models ? i.e. How do you identify a MS OPPY model ?
Any help appreciated
