I picked this up today and had a chuckle. It must have been such a huge seller in the shops and sold out that quickly because I had never seen one before today.
Now to get it set up on my bike.
Wonder if it pedals for you as well?

Now, as someone who has a MAJOR interest in gear changing mechanisms I have to say I have NEVER seen this one before!cludence wrote:I picked this up today and had a chuckle. It must have been such a huge seller in the shops and sold out that quickly because I had never seen one before today.

Does it work? I doubt it.... but if Karen wants to test it it out I await the results with interest!
By the bye, when was this item on the market? Late 80's possibly?
Cheers

Yes it was on the market in the 80's. The man who had it said they could never work out how they worked nor did the company ever charge them for it. I suspect the company went bust.
I dont know if I have the heart to take it out of the packet to test it.
Karen.

whoah.. yeah...
I can't wait to read some of the others' speculative explanations about this puppy and exactly how the *%#(AT) it is/was meant to work.

I just did a google and came up with the following page. If you scroll down it lists all sorts of patents for things like this.

The NY Times ran an article on it a while ago.
It didn't help explain it at all
Did it come with instructions you could scan perhaps Karen?

...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

The picture shows the upper run of the chain deflected downwards. I presume that as you exert more force on the pedals the chain would try to straighten and the lever would shift into an easier gear. I wonder what prevents the arrangement 'hunting' for the right gear as the tension on the chain goes back and forth...
