Now that I think I've got this picture posting thing sorted out, I thought I'd share my most recent re-build. Definitely nothing fancy, definitely not a showroom restoration or anything like that, just an old bike I picked up from a dump shop a while ago. It's a 1979 Custom Built Cycles "Medallion Series" mixte. It was in terrible condition, the chrome guards were unusable. I stripped it down, cleaned It up, & re-greased all the bearings. It needed a set of wheels, a seat, & new bar tape. I left the paintwork original because the decals are in quite good condition, considering it's 36 years old. It's also a pleasure to ride, having nice Suntour shifters & derailers..

Just make sure you know where your knees are in relation to the stem shifters if you are pedalling out of the saddle...

My custom made quill stem from Winter Bicycles has finally arrived.....
Approx. 5 months from 'request' to delivery but hey, who's counting.... please don't ask how much $$$....
Now I can ride my Master with a 31.8mm clamp size heavy carbon fiber anatomic handlebar to soak up the high frequency vibrations that alloy and steel bars send straight through to my battered hands.
I didn't want to use a chunky ahead stem on a frameset with narrow tubing and 26mm carbon bars cost even more than the custom stem and Cinelli Neo Morphe bar combined so this was was best option. I think the quill stem tube size with a single lug before the clamp is a reasonable subtle step up to a 31.8mm diameter handlebar.
Whilst I was at it, I also updated the Athena 11 shifters to Ultratorque (painted Chorus 11) shifters. White brake levers and paddle shifters......... contentious........

More details please! I know "the dollars" is classified info but that stem is truly a work of art, as long as it is as strong as it looks.open roader wrote:

Made by Eric Estlund who is the sole proprietor, chief engineer and floor sweeper at Winter Bicycles in Oregon USA.elantra wrote:More details please! I know "the dollars" is classified info but that stem is truly a work of art, as long as it is as strong as it looks.
It's made from steel tube as is the lug section - I trust Eric's selection of tubing, he is after all, a much celebrated and award winning West Coast bicycle builder. All fillet brazed, cleaned up, polished down and then chrome electroplated.
This is what it looked like prior to chrome plating :-
