Contentious topic

Some say the front hub should be readable from the front of the bike, some the rear.

The really serious ones insist it be readable through the valve hole with no tyre mounted. :D

That is simply good workmanship that any self-respecting wheel builder would deliver.

Stop tormenting the chap. Front wheels are symmetrical (mostly) so flick the wheel around, swap the Q/R over so the lever is still on the left and the OCD afflicted will be satisfied.
I must say, I have never in 40-odd years of wheelbuilding bothered about where the hub label/engraving was in relation to the valve hole. Mind you except for show bikes I don't worry about the tyre label being opposite the valve either (or next to it if that rocks your boat :) )

Richard, you should not violate Rule 40. Particularly as it makes sense.
as for simply swapping the quick release, be careful that the rim decals are facing the correct way. No cheating.
But then there is Rule 57

Well I have been around bikes a little while and as far as a rule book for setting a bike I have never heard of this before. but there you go.
The setting up of a bike it needs to be as uniform as possible. The frame name decals or paint are always positioned the same distance
from the top lug. Same colour handle plugs, bar tape and toe clip straps etc etc
As far as wheels being the right way around the back wheel goes in first and what ever the direction of and any engraving it the front wheel follows.
I say the because of flip flop hubs (straight road and track hubs when the rider sits on the bike the engraving is the right way to read) this is even today with wheel decals.
The only item that is different is the hub QL handles. They always go on the right hand side of the wheel facing the them.
Now for tyre labels in the old days on singles they are to small to make difference and high pressures there where no labels.

With that said uniform bikes always stand out from the crowd the small thing do make a difference. To me anyway.

a bike I picked up yesterday. The seller advertised it as a 54cm, unfortunatly its more like a 57cm. It has a bit of rust, hopefully its ok. Rides very nicely. It came with record hubs, ma 40 rims, strada ranks, 600 RD, campy fd, gran comp brakes, so a bit of a mixture. I am going to try to trade the frame for something more in my size if anyone is keen.

last week i gave up trying to find any narrow 27" rims for my latest rebuid and got the rims laced with steel, then when i came out into my backyard on sunday afternoon, i found a bike had been dropped off. i seem to be gettin a local reputation as a place for old bakes to go :D
heres a lovely 27"record with sugino running gear, alloy rims 54cm frame. pretty much rust free . mr kamaguchi even put a sticker on the frame to say its a sports frame. 12.5 kg with gross brakes and bars and rear rack. I suspect it will scrub up really nice with some road bars and brakes addedImage

Picked this beauty up a while back for free when I purchased a Klein quantum.
Don't know much about it to be honest.... Anyone seen one before??

Will do a full strip down and rebuild at some point.... It's one of many projects!

Love the colour. That should come up a treat. Looks like a Tecnotrat fork.

This has also been posted on the TT thread.

The bike is a 1985 Raleigh Team Panasonic (as used in the TdF between 1984 and 1986). However this has been dressed up as a period TT bike from the late 80s. Just included, I am told, a HED disc wheel from the late 80s, a FIR Quasar front wheel and coupled with a set of clip on U-shaped Velocity aero bars. It even has a period Vittorio Corsa Squadra Prof tubular tyre on the front wheel! Which I was assured by my LBS is safe to ride on even though it is about 25 years old. Wear on the thread indicates it has hardly been used. With all the new equipment, the bikes gotten rather heavy, I'd venture to say a considerable 11 kg as opposed to 9.8kg.

Am quite new to ITT and never used aero tech before so all very new to me. Hate climbing with it but on the flat it really goes esp once over 40kmph. Did my first ITT at Calga last weekend, just outside of Sydney. This is a 25km course. Course notouriosly undulating, but managed to do a respectable 45 mins. Only had about 15 mins practice on aero bars prior to this effort. Believe I can bring this down to about 42mins once I get acquainted with the terrain.

on the net she looks like a 1976 model Peugeot ladies cycle, has some nice features and
pretty much complete.

Picked up this for $5.00 the other day. A mid 80's Hallmark mixte

I only wanted the frame, but when I got it home, I realised it has a Shimano Front Freewheel System on it. I've since cleaned it up a bit, put a seat on it, sorted out the tyres, & taken it up & down the street a few times. The FFS seems to work ok so I will probably just re-build the running gear & leave it as is. Quite comfortable to ride too.

The biggest drama with the front freewheel is that the chain is always moving. Bad news for any loose clothing since it doesn't just get greasy, it gets torn up too. However it does let you change gear whilst coasting.

Nice Bianchi munga, pity we don't get a better look at it. Any closer side on shots?
