I think the plain wheels tip this bike into a classic beauty territory. All it needs is some 600 arabesque cranks with that combo and it would be timeless. Buy a cheap ally (Visp) or the like to hang your garish high coloured hipster bits on. It's a classically styled bike with a soul, and you should treat her with some respect. Yes . But that's absolutely fine by me . The 1984 catalogue i got recently (which i will be popping up on the Dawes Appreciation Society thread as soon as i've scanned it), describes the Shadow (all 30lbs of it) as 'the envy of all the competition' . If it was anything else i would have left it on the tip, no derailleur hanger, crummy looking cranks and a rear brake bridge made from a flat plate. But by god it goes fast, she'll sit in the 40s all day.

To my eyes, that bike and the blue wheels are for good, can't have one without the other. But if you want to talk classic beauty?

The original Shimano 500 gear is too shabby for my liking so i'll be using a 600 Arabesque group, but the front shifter cable is set up to have casing going straight to the stop on the 500 derailleur, the 600 hasn't got such a stop so how can i get it to work with that?

not sure without a pic, but something like this to terminate the cable outer/casing?

Yeah that's about all i can think of, but it then leaves a redundant cable stop on the non drive side of the downtube, near the BB. There's no way i could grind it off (least of all because i'm already more than halfway through painting).

sorry mate, i can't visualise what's there, what used to be there, and what needs to be done to run the 600 FD.

Bugger wouldn't you know it, none of the 5 bikes i have to hand have anything like it i could photograph, it'll have to wait til the next time i'm out at my farm. Not too much of a rush on it anyway, it only needs to be ready in time for the next L'Eroica.

I snookered myself with a similar issue a while ago. Ended up just using a short section of cable housing from a stop at the lower end of the down tube under the bottom bracket. It doesn't need to go all the way to the FD, it just provides a guide for the cable.

Early 90's Vetta Titanized (Columbus Gara fillet brazed tubing) with Campagnolo Mirage and Campy wheels. Runs a dream.

Facepalm. OF COURSE, the casing isn't under any kind of pressure so it doesn't NEED to have a 2nd stop. The best solution is always the simplest one, thanks LG.

The cable stop on most of the 6200 FD's is a small piece of steel which fits to the FD where it clamps to the frame. These appear to have been only press fitted in place. Many of these FD's are now missing this piece. If you look at the inside of the clamp, there will be a small groove where this used to fit. Some were manufactured without them at all.

The one I have [an Arabesque FD6200] has its cable stop moulded in alloy behind the clamp, exactly like the one in the pictures on Velobase.

... and then there is also the version you post in your pic of which are on some of the FD's (these are ones not covered by my "most" comment. I currently have 2 Arabesque FD's, neither have a cable stop or groove for the stop, 2 non-arabesque FD's - 1 with a stop as mentioned above, the other missing the stop but with the groove where it used to be. Just depends how lucky you are with the one you get I guess. Idrcycles maybe should swap for yours

Sorry to take things off topic, but just to finish the discussion re derailleurs, the one i have hasn't got the moulded in stop or any kind of protrusion that one could clip on to. LG's idea will work just fine though, i hardly ever change out of the big ring anyway so the front derailleur is only there for decoration .
