Seriously though, she's a beauty. You must be very pleased with your efforts. How does she ride?

It rides great, just need to replace the bb bearings as it has a little play in it. But the dura ace hubs are smooth as the day they were sold in 1976 and the f/f weighs just under 2kg....i love riding it!

How are those Roval wheels? I bought a set for 10 bucks that I haven't got around to using yet, and I'm a bit dubious about em.

Not sure yet - they look and feel good have to wait and do more Kms on them before I can say for sure.

That is a truly classic road bike restoration, with all the parts from the correct period AFAICS. You've done a great job with the respray and decals/name painting.

You can find some gum hoods for those brake levers here at Loose Screws. I've found them very helpful to deal with.

Cheers mate, i didnt have anything rechromed i just pulled out the tube of autosol and started rubbing! There is the slightest bit of pitting on the left fork leg but other than that for a 33 year old chrome it is in great shape.

This is my Australia Day offering ... one of the last of the Australian made bicycles - the 1977 Malvern Star Superstar - resurrected..... 8)

In November I bought a MS Superstar from Jacksparrow on this forum for $40. It looked a bit like this...

Image

Actually it looked a lot worse, but it was the same colour. That's actually a picture of ImNoPro's bike. The one I got from Jack had no front wheel and was a five speed - single chain ring - and had no rack. Otherwise it was identical.

Well, now it looks like this...

Image

It is still a work in progress but today I was able to take it for a ride and take a couple of snaps before I pull it apart again for the top coats and final build. The frame, fork, bottom bracket, rings, cranks, pedals, front derailler and stem are all original but the 700c alloys wheels, handlebar, 7 cog cassette, RSX derailler and brifters all came from a 10 year old donor bike. I needed to fit some Tektro R556 long reach brakes for the wheel size conversion...and I added some tyres, english leather and a pump...and a brass chainstay protector.

The conversion was a little tricky. The stays had to be spread, the forks had to be spread and ground out, the steerer is an odd size so I had to stick with the original stem, the seat post is an odd size, the brake bridge and fork crown had to be drilled out to fit the new brakes, but it has all worked out well.

The bike needs recabling. I've used the cables from the donor bike just to satisfying myself that everything was going to work, but they are too short and starting to fray. My plan was to replace the cranks and rings too but due to the nature of the bottom bracket I had to stick with the originals which meant I retained a little more weight than I would have liked, but the bike is 4kg lighter than the original Superstar. After trying several different deraillers I end up using the original Thunderbird II Uniglide model - because it was the one that worked most satisfactorily.

I have the original chrome guards in very good condition. I am looking for a simple brass bell to make it fully street legal and in the longer term it will need a rack. I have plans to turn the dynamo mount on the fork into an outboard LED head light mount. Ultimately I want to change the cassette to something broader than the 13/23 that's on it at present as I have plans to ride this bike to a mate in Queensland* who is a signwriter. I've got a job for him... :)

531c frame, full 600 groupset, mmmm :)

Just curious, what is this frame? I am looking at buying something very similar. However the owner doesn't know what it is, other than light for a steel frame.

The Apollo!

Image

Image

Its an Apollo Delta, apparently a pretty crappy bike in its time but this thing runs like a dream. The story goes that someone picked up this baby in an op shop, the frame was obviously in good nic but the running gear was a bit rough. they spent a few dollars getting it going and it became their first Roadie. It then got passed on to a couple of others who used it as their first roadie, each one spending a few dollars on something else on it. The last owner, my mate, put the blue tyres and white (now a little brown...) bar tape on it, which makes it look pretty schmick. The rule is that no matter what you've done to it, it owes you $100 and that's all you can sell it for. I think The Apollo won't be leaving my possession in a hurry though. I love it! Did a 50km ride on it today (my longest yet by far) and whilst i'm tired now, it didn't miss a beat.

I put the Brooks saddle on it as the Apollo one on it sucked, and whilst its still breaking in, it is very comfy. I'm thinking about a Brooks Saddle bag next (just got one of those wedge ones, like the leather better!) and maybe some chrome fenders, although my buddy who i bought it off (who now is hardcore road rider) said he will kill me if he sees the Apollo with Fenders. I also have a blue water bottle and blue pump.

That's a classic. I love bikes like that. The more owners the better. Everyone makes a contribution and the bike keeps on doing what is supposed to do - be ridden ! It sounds like the Apollo has converted a few riders along the way ( and a few riders have converted it), and if you ever let it go, it will have a few more yet. It wont go to a purist who'll turn up their nose and sneer 'low end bike' but it would be wasted on them anyhow. Pure bike: no sophistication required. Keep it rolling !
