Regarding the "Lets build a Classic with the best bits" thread I thought I would conribute the other end of the story, at least as far as derailleurs are concerned. in the picture is my Claud Butler Buccaneer circa 1954-56.
I thought it would be nice to fit a NOS Cyclo Olympic derailleur to this bike as it matched the period and I had a Bayliss Wiley Freehub with 1/8th cogs to match....

All I can say is DO NOT DO THIS... that way lies madness. The dearilleur is the most fiddly thingto set up I have ever met. It appears to have a capacity of 4 teeth which makes the 4th cog (22t) useless even though it can reach it horizontally.

It looks very cute but changes like a neglected combine harvester and hard to set up.... if I had any hair I would have lost it by now.....

It may have been a nightmare to set up but it looks like it was worth the lost hair - very nice bike - love the saddle.

Mmmmm, first stop 531db's place, then his parents, next stop Richards, down to GaryF's place, then over to snoop at kukamungas latest finds. Time permitting a detour via stevendavids wouldnt go astray either.

Rotsa ruck kiddo. The SJH is firmly bolted to the floor along with several others including a dilectable Bol d'Or.
The bike room is booby trapped [checking booby traps now] & you will need to get past the savage flesh eating possums.
