Carlton Catalina Reprise

Postby WyvernRH » Sun Apr 20, 2008 6:41 pm

While trawling Google for info on my Carlton Catalina I was surprised to see mention of the e-bay sale pop up in a thread on this this form so I thought folk might like to see what became of the frame.
It is a 1959 Carlton Catalina with capella lugs but not an all chrome version as was supposed as I found blue paint under the head badge so it would have had the chromatic blue finish over the main tubes. The badge was stuffed and had to be replaced at considerable expense (what sort of dork strips the paint off a frame but doesn't remove the head badge?)
I have restored it as a 'chromie' with stuff from the spares box which makes it look like an equipment upgrade about 1966-68.
Hope it meets with your approval cos I'm really pleased with it!

Nice job Richard. I like the lug highlighting.

Lovely Carlton Richard. Any chance of more close-up photos?

Love it!
Has got me thinking about my first project when I get home

What is the go with chrome, electrplating etc, super expensive?
does the whole frame need to be done or can it be done in spots??
What have people experience with re chroming been like?

Delete all characters after the .jpg extention.

This bike has not been re-chromed, it didn't need it. I just de-rusted and treated the few dodgy areas around the bottom bracket and inside the forks and decided it was "patina" which added character to the bike. Like I said, this bike originally had blue translucent paint over the chrome which had been stripped off along with any transfers. So I decided not to replace the paint and pretend it was the plain chrome version which was also available. After cleaning up, I just added the white bits, lug lining, transfers etc. (oh yes, and all the componants :D )
Regarding re-chroming generally, yes it is expensive these days and the quality depends on the standards set by your chosen chrome plating works. Equally, some are amenable to part chroming (which is a lot of hassle for them) most I've met are not and will only plate whole frames or parts.
I had a favorite chap who worked out of a back mews in Kew, London who was a perfectionist cycle specialist but he retired and I emigrated (sigh..) The local guys here in Hamilton, Newcastle NSW are pretty good once you convince them you are serious about quality and are prepared to pay for it.
Try and find a chroming shop who do work for the veteran/vintage car or motorcycle crowd. They tend to be very picky about quality, just make sure the chroming shop realise you expect the same.
