Retiring the 1980 Raleigh Rapide 531 plain gauge to a wet weather machine. (Suntour superbe brakes, rear derailier, hubs, Mavic hard anodized rims (1985), shimano 600 cranks(1982?), down bar shifters, some original bits....) Bar one LBS visit, I've done the maintenance. Not ridden much in the last 8 years, but that is changing. Wife says I can get the new bike that was supposed to be in exchange for the engagement ring. 20+ years ago. Running, ducking, weaving.
I have acquired subject steel fame in GC, and have started to purchase bits. Perhaps not a true retro, but will suit me.
Running gear Campag Athena (all silver alloy of course)
Would appreciate some advice regarding these new-fangled bits:
- Head set. I haven't picked up a good argument on BNA and other places to do other than get a good quality threaded assembly for the original forks, and then either stick a traditional quill stem in it or an adapter for a modern stem etcetera. What does your experience suggest? Can I please have your suggestions for model with or without cartridge bearings though I'd much prefer the latter?
- Not sure about handle bars. The modern shaped one make sense particularly with integrated brakes and shifters. Suggested alloy bars to integrate with stem above?
- Haven't looked at seat posts yet, looks a bit more complicated than it was a while back? Might do a brookes saddle.
- Wheels. Was keen on Mavics again, with ferrules in the rims because they have lasted for ever. My son's old mid level trek with bontragers are cracking at the nipple holes, corrosion there hasn't helped. Wiggle had Mavics for campag with ferruled nipple holes six months ago. But now mavic don't seem to make ferruled rims, and have to get campag wheels to get campag hubs unless i have them built? Would appreciate your experience and recommendations! Any body got some good used wheels?

Might have to buy me some new tools :-)

You're off to a good start with that frame :D
I've built up 2 lugged steel frames with modern Campagnolo and new quill stems and bars,New Old Stock seat posts and hubs. Lots of fun :D

If you want ferruled wheels with a campag hub, you could take a look at the Fulcrum Racing 5 - they don't look super modern but they are lovely wheels for every day and they are cheap from wiggle or ribble.

Campagnolo still make beautiful 1" threaded head sets and they aren't outrageously expensive. They look identical to those available throughout the 1980s bar the graphics.

I'd personally stick with a quill stem - the 1" threadless headsets just don't look right and the threaded to threadless adapter stems are a visual disaster that is even worse. A lovely polished quill stem would suit the bike perfectly. Most of the stems you see are are that dull looking aluminium, so on my own retro build I'm going to re-use the ITM eclipse that came with the bike, regardless that it's a bit tatty looking on the paint.

I would expect that frame to have a 27.2 seatpost, so you are literally spoiled for choice on seat posts if that is the case. Cheap or expensive, painted or polished, used or new, it's an easy size to get.

Your bars will be somewhat dictated by the stem setup you choose, but there are plenty of polished alloy bars from the early 1990s when ergo shifting became common that have indents on the front and rear of the bars for the cabling.

So far have bit-knocked-around Campag aero seat post, all silver Athena 11s groupset, steel Campag headset, couple of used stems. Got some new tools!
Likely modern-shape Nitto bars. Possibly mavic wheels, but would be keen on <=32 hole 'retro' set.
Saddle - duno, too many options and my backside has only experience of one for any extended period. Got to get moving.... :oops:

if you want a truly modern bar shape, have a look at the soma highway one. 26.0mm clamp, 40, 42, 44 wide.
i'm keen for someone to buy a set of these so i can have a look ;p

Looking good! BTW, the concor is my saddle of choice. Like a cloud.
I have some other bars for you to see on saturday, too. Likely not what you're expecting.
I ride 25s on the basis that they divide more easily into 100 than 23s.

Also, have a talk to velo13 regarding wheel options - he built me a set with which I'm extremely happy.
I ride 25s on the basis that they divide more easily into 100 than 23s.
