Trying to identify the maker of this bike,it has a Sturmey Archer gear changer,think it would have been 3 gears,looks like a twist shift arrangement,the main tube says Local as the manufacturer and on the front stem it says "South" and the other word is missing,serial number under crank is 046(or 48) and it has an Oxford light
An oldie but an...oldie. I'd let the poor girl rest in peace as a garden ornament.
I can't offer much help on the identifying front, other than that it looks like a 3 speed club racer. The date of the Sturmey Archer hub, if it is legible, might give you some indication, but that could have been fitted at a later date.
Thanks for your help,got enough garden ornaments.I am into old Italian scooters(Lambretta and Vespa) and have seen worse(but not by much) examples restored to unbelieveable condition.Just wanted to find out if its anything that may be of interest>will have a look t the hub tomorrow

Those roadsters were as common as muck in the 1950s and 1960s, my first two or three bikes were variations on the theme, from 20in wheels to 26in then 28in. Coaster brakes, then 3 speed Sturmey Archer gears. The frames were pretty ubiquitous, might have been Super Elliot, Malvern Star or a half a million other bike shops who put 'their' brand name on them. They're okay, and an important historical artifact, but something special... unlikely.

That is correct,but I personally dont see any problem with that.Surely it is better that you blokes buy these things rather than end up as landfill and at the prices I sell things?I am sure that some of you would be pretty fed up if you found out that some bloke had a top of the range whatever retro bike but didnt do any research on it and binned it

seriously tho, you can do what you like with your kerbside fossicking. i for one give no flying bicycles for your profiteering. where's our cut?
And just for the record,if I do sell a bike I generally look after the buyer.Last one i sold gave the bloke an old aluminium MTB frame and a couple of new schwable(?) tyres that someone had thrown out.I would rather give stuff away than it end up as landfill especially to someone that has an interest and use for the things I collect.If I get a few $$ as well thats great

What about the time you sold a clearly damaged bicycle without disclosing that it was in fact damaged, despite this having been pointed out to you by a (now past) member of this community? In fact, I seem to recall that complaining about that particular incident was in fact your motivation for joining the forum in the first place.
Safe to say I won't be adding you to my saved sellers list.
Dan you were not there when I had the conversation with that particular member but have probably made up your mind from his side of the story,I disagree that it was damaged and thats why he slagged me off.I have no problem stating that I have joined to make sure I dont sell something for the wrong price and am free to use the forum a I see fit,no problem if you dont want to add me as a favourite,plenty of buyers out there
You're right, I wasn't there - I did, however, form my own conclusion from the images you posted in your ad, which was unsurprisingly the same as that expressed (slightly less eloquently) by Wal.
You're right, you're able to use an open internet forum in (mostly) any way you see fit. I'd suggest you may have burned the 'ask in the retro forum' bridge with your 100% post, though.
Yep picked it up yesterday on my way back through from Warwick, I've already managed to strip her down to the bare frame .
After some very careful inspection I've worked out that the head tube logo reads "Built by The Local Cycle Co. South Brisbane".
My google searching so far has come up with the information that Guthrie Bicycles (best known as the parent company of Ashby) made bikes under the Local brand, but there is no other information about how, when or where Local started.
I'll keep searching, in the mean time the old girl is very tired and will need a lot of TLC. Most of the components are past the point of no return, but the frame and fork are ok. One of the BB cups has sheared off in the BB so in due course I will need to send it to a local engineer for some attention.
