Kool... have you got early levers with the "self adjusting" knob? Just noticed one of my plastic hoods is broken (but probably still functional).

Original Brooks plastic seat, has yours gone brittle & fallen to bits too? :/ I'm staring at my exposed mattress frame wondering if I can find a squarefoot of thick leather & just tack it over in place of crispy PVC :)

Working out how to fit a rack too... stalking some Swiss Pletschers but they ain't cheap.


Popped down to Abbotsford who got me some 1 3/8 rubber; been trolling every other LBS edumacating them on the existence of "half link" for chain :P a surprisingly lot (most!!) have never heard of them before. I might try dressing up retro to hitup some known hipster joints, perhaps they use odd# chains more often of their fixies ;)

Got my tyres (good ones - Tioga) and tubes from Velogear (the online store) if they still exist.
I got a half link without too much rummaging from Velocycles in Nth Fitzroy. I'd be amazed if Abbortsford cycles don't have them somewhere.
Good place for odd random stuff is http://www.bicycleworks.com.au/home.html I found an older style SA indicator gear change thing there. Their website is off line steel try calling first.
Can do you a deal on the brake levers; not in great condition but they are authentic. I also have the flexxy steel brakes which were mostly there as decoration and I replaced with Tektro 556.

The original Brooks seat was long gone when I bought the bike, replaced by an eighties plastic number, which is ok. I've replaced both post and seat to suit me but will hang onto the old ones.
My folder has the wire and plastic rack, which originally came with a dinky shopping bag - long gone. The pletscher racks can be found occasionally on gumtree. These are, I believe, all one size but you would need to modify the struts for your twenty. You could also go to CERES Bike Shed and ferret around, as you might find one there.

I have a quite decent white Brooks saddle that I purchased when I had a 20. No longer have bike as I'm a big boy and have graduated to big wheels (I know I'm going to cop it for that).

If interested please pm me. I'm in Melbourne so prefer local. My currency for this item is beer, not a lot but enough to make me part with it.

Thanks fellas, I'll keep them all in mind... think I'd better get this thing bolted back together & rolling first before hoarding more bits. I haven't actually ridden any R20 yet, they were too crappy unroadworthy when they arrived - I couldn't even ride them in. Started stripping big bits off, now experimenting with derusting & trying lanolin to flood cavities to slow further corrosion. It's become yet another long drawn out project, I never learn.

Might checkout BicycleWorks next time I'm up Thomastown way. I tried BicycleRecycle week before down the opposite end of town but found nothing worthwhile. Popped into CERES the Sunday before, interesting place but they tell me they actively exterminate all Raleigh upon arrival!! 8( so as not to contaminate their metric/ISO parts hoard. I did score a potmetal rack though... "Kona" I think it says, made in Japan.

Abbotsford did find me a half link but it's the flimsy one with a wobbly pin held in by a tiny bent wire (p/n 1948A sold thru bicyclepartswarehouse) & it's by YBN. I don't have faith in something that flimsy, not when I'm replacing a nicely solid version on existing KMC chain... looks like KMC makes one for Z410 with a pressin pin.

Yep Fitzroy fixies joints is where I had in mind, once I've sorted out a suitable disguise to blend in with the trendies :P

Yep to the graduating to bigger & bigger wheels... until now :D new bikes are getting ridiculously HUGE for what they do. Do you really NEED a 700+ it's like punting a Toyota Landcruiser to do inner city school run. When younger I commuted on a 26" and that worked fine (I survived!), I don't think anything bigger is going to be immune to tramtracks unless your tyre gets 4" wide. Compact frame with 16-20" is proving a lot more practical to "Stowaway" in the car boot ;)

Update to ongoing halflink saga...

Melb Bike Centre (high st) ordered me some YBN press-on 3-links... better than bentwire I guess! But it's a length of steel coloured joiner, not great should I want fancy coloured chain.

Cruised thru Brunswick & yay found someone at Commuter Cycles who knew what I was talking about :D searched his stash, he found a 3/16 version but not 1/8... ah well, it's on order. Pretty sure it's KMC.

Easy enough to break and rejoin with a chain tool.

I'm not convinced that the bent wire is more flimsy than a press fit in that application. It is not being subjected to side loads if the chain-line is straight. However it is ugly.

Hi folks, sorry been awol. R20 Reno on hiatus as workstand commandeered to service the kiddy bike fleet
in the lead up to school hols :/ now that everything's overhauled... it's blowing a gale & hailing :P Melbourne!


Yep it's more The Look vs other practicalities... like catching on trousers or gouging the paintwork of the chainguard :D but it definitely don't Look good.

That said, a 3rd unit has arrived (: and this one uses that very maligned pinned halflink. Seems to work ok under my brief testing. But oddly I think it's running a 93 link chain with a larger 16 rear sprocket... dropout position ain't much changed. (The other 2 stablemates are stock 15 with 93 & 94 chains.)


Yup no stranger to halflink whole chains, they were once the rage in BMXland. There's some very nice shiny
Japanese makes... pricey to suit. But I think they'll still stretch more than plain chain & are heavier.
Was thinking of stealing a half link off one of those but they don't fit well into a standard KMC afaik.
(or could be my dodgy tinkering.)

Lil bump. I happened across a Raleigh twenty fokder in a 6 bike bulk purchase. Originally I was after a ladies 3spd in the mix, but appears there is a little more of value in there in the form of the twenty. It is in fairly good condition for its age including the original style rack.

Another project perhaps!

Replacement bottom bracket, a crude fix. http://www.rhizomes.squat.net/twenty.html

I replaced the seat post with a longer one (IRD purchased direct from their website) and put decent brakes ( Tektro 559 bolt type - not standard, with Koolstop pads). Cleaned the frame with elbow grease and car polish then Ranex to stabilise the rust and clear rattle can rustproof to keep it nice. Cleaned the chrome with citric acid and finished with wax. Replaced cables, tubes and tyres ( Tioga PowerBlocks from Velogear). chromed steel Rims need replacing with something alloy, but while 451 rims (the type fitted to AU R20 imports) are available, these are $$$.

I find it fun to ride, and the SA AW provides a wide range, despite being 3 gears.
