Malvern 5 star : comments wanted

Postby 5 star freak » Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:31 pm

I have been looking for a 1940-60 Malvern Star semi-racer type for a few months . I would like to hear opinions on one bicycle that I have in my watch list. From searching the internet I believe it is circa 1949-55 , one reason being the red plug in the head stem. Joined BNA today and enjoyed spending hours searching the retro Bicycling forum for information. Very helpful and there are many knowledgeable members. Five star bicycles do not seem rare ( definitely not common) but they do have high prices on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281239393151 ... 1436.l2649
This is the one that I would like comment on, please. It looks original to me . The seller says the seat is not original. Cannot see the seat or the seat post.
I think it could be made serviceable for casual rides .Probably fit brakes for safety.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/151215915874 ... 1436.l2649
A 5 star frame was listed today. It needs many parts to complete. Should be an interesting item to watch.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170988547215 ... 1436.l2649
Another 5 star had a $1000 buy now or best offer. Best offer was $600. Not accepted.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Malv ... true&rt=nc
This five star sold recently for $521. It was wrongly advertised as a three star until someone must have informed him.

Thank you,
Ray

wonder if the brake bridge is drilled or if it has an tube insert? poor condition, wheels dont look correct, take the last one as fair price, doesnt look more than 300 to me but Im not a fan :) its a restoratuion project

cant say what that is you need a photo of the head tube, just saying it is one doesnt cut it. you need many more detail pickies.

nice looking bike not a silly price, for what most of these are they are overpriced there are far better value buys in the Australian steel frame market. But if you want one NOW youll have to pay

I had doubts on the wheels because the rims looked too shiny .

I thought the brake was incorrect.

This was the pick of the lot. I'll keep waiting. My one and only bike was a Malvern Star that had a hard life before it was a Christmas present from my parents. It was all chrome plated with three cogs on the rear wheel but the chain was fitted to one cog , no changing mechanism. Nostalgia I suppose.

most had steel rims, our resident expert says some were all alloy so some definately were, hopefully he'll pop in soon, you could also order most local bikes fitted with whatever you wanted/could afford. Hubs look to be real cheap and nasty hence comment :)

didnt see them earlier, still its a restoration project , 300 or there abouts but when you look at that last one you can see the value of good original and complete versus bare yucky frame.

thats a funny one :) still you could change the gearing I spose.

[i]At 11 years of age and no bike mechanical aptitude I had to accept it. It went well so it must have been fitted in the best position.

Hello everyone,

Back again after searching for an education on the older Malvern Stars. Here are a few USA ebay listings . 1st. is 1949 a 5 star . 2nd is a 1938 BSA . 3rd is a 2 star ( 1930's? )

1. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380661073165 ... 1436.l2649
Ebay USA . MS 5 star. Most of you have probably seen this one. It has been on ebay for a long time.

2. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111248193170 ... 1436.l2649
Ebay in USA .Here is a 1938 BSA Gold Band Special that seems to have some parts in common with what was used on the Malvern Star. Thought someone may like to see. I believe the Gear system is one I saw while searching BNA . I thought the brakes may had been added but they show in the advertising sheet.
At the end of the ad it mentions another model available , a Gold Opperman Special with Renyolds 531 tubing for frame . Not so for the bike on ebay though.

3. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331111963400 ... 1436.l2649
Ebay USA . MS 2 star . Don't know if he has been given the right information .

Enjoy

I think it's part of a deceased estate that they have been trying to sell for 18 months or so.

Lovely paint job. Looks a lot like the work of Kenn Dickie. He used to work for Rup Bates in Melbourne. Good examples and info here..http://www.finlaybrothershistory.info/page63.html

Good vintage Malvern Star items .

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1952-Malvern ... 461c13da62
A 5 star on ebay. I recall seeing a 5 star on BNA being rebuilt that was the same colour. Could be the same one or a coincidence.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Malv ... 3f31f1521a
A one star on ebay .The serial number would indicate a Perth 1955 if I have picked up the info correctly from BNA.

A two star 1942 Melbourne made Sports racer with 2 star Champ stickers from 1955-57

The One Star bicycle in Perth has been discussed previously on BNA and it seems the letter/numbering system was not quite the same in Perth prior to 1941 . So it is a 39-41 model with a swap to some 50's MS parts . Good work Warren.

This bike sold for $611 . Now that the auction is finished would the wise explain what makes this frame so valuable.

I can see it is in good straight condition with nickel finish and for such an old bike that would be exceptional .

Other than the plating the frame seems like a standard semi-racer

I'm still learning and searching information from wherever I can find it.

If you had a 5 star with all the alloy hardware you had a very special bike. Oppy said he did well riding the roads/hills because he had gears and lots of them when a lot did not . A light bike would have been a big help. These were special bikes and would be very hard to find today.

Of course there were early 1,2,3,4 stars that were built as racers too.

The factory 5 stars were models with the best parts and MS advertised them as the top model.( we know now that they were not quite the same as what were raced)

Would like to find a late 30's - mid 50's semi racer with the cyclo 3-4 speed set up. Star count does not matter.

They are all just bikes. Most people like the bike they have or the one they are thinking of buying next and after joining BNA some just like 'em all......... Don't bother with delusions of grandeur.

I bid on that frame and was amazed to see it go nuts, can only imagine the shiny bits caught peoples eye, it's not a track frame
but more a club racer, in any case I hope it gets built up and would like to see it then.

Scratchman,

I thought $350 may have been a chance. It sat at $290 for a while and then it got hammered. I was p.o'd so I gave it a couple of bids as a goodbye and later I saw someone else did the same. The seller should be happy . Yes ,it will certainly look good all rideable .

This bike was in the BNA forum and he has been doing a great job on the build. Shame Vern does not post (pick-up S.A. only) .
