Speedwell Hubs?

Postby WyvernRH » Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:40 pm

A question for any Speedwell knowledgable folk out there. One of my current projects is a bicycle I am 95% sure is a pre-war Speedwell from the frame number, frame design and the fact that apart from the Dulux Orange paint scheme it is basically identical to an example in Jack Hephner's collection. Not proof but close.... Now, this weekend I got around to cleaning up the hubs and rims (it has 'narrow' westwood rims). The front is a steel British Hub Company 32h but the rear was a little different. It is a steel 40h flip-flop but inscibed into the barrel of the hub is "Speedwell" in flowing script, no other markings.
So, did Speedwell make there own hubs or maybe they got BHC to make hubs for them? In which case why isn't the front hub a "Speedwell"? The rims are identical and both wheels appear of the same period.
Did other manufacturers, say malvern Star have there own parts?

If its of any interest, I have a bike with a flowing script inscribed hub on the front wheel.
