600km later.. On the Viscount

Yes the viscount and I have recently cracked 600km :P All was going well until I thought id finally try to set the front wheel properly. It has been a little to the right making it slightly uncomfortable to ride without hanging on to the bars.

So taking the wheel off, giving it a clean and putting it back on I couldn't center it correctly without the front spokes hitting the forks :S:S Many hours later I give up. Returning relaxed the this morning I pick up the wheel between my fingers and spin it along the ground only for it to shoot of out of my hands and into the door.

It appears, for the last 600km's and numerous 80km/h descents, my cartridge bearing hub has been permanently attached to the axle that runs through it

My bike had a funny setup of two 15mm holding screws on each side of the axle securing the wheel in place. It seems for how ever long and as best as I can tell, the front axle has been rolling around in the front drop outs with the highly tensioned set of securing nuts holding the wheel to the bike. The 2nd screw stopped the unscrewing motion caused by the axle that didn't actually spin. :P

Sadly, I cant work out to replace these sealed cartridges so its a trip to the bike store for me. Finges crossed the viscount front hub didn't and doesn't take a cartridge that is measures in furlongs.

Just think how much faster I can go with a front wheel thats spins :D

I'm no metal urgist, but F$%& me dead, are you absolutely sure about that? Is there wear damage to the fork end? By the way, I also love your bike. Quite possibly not as much as you do, but it is very cool. I hope you haven't caused the fork too much grief.

the axle will not turn by hand... however. there was enough turning force to spin in it, well to produce a small bit of slip. everynow and then. Turning the wheel by hand you can see it turn then grip, then the axle turns in the drop outs then it slips again.

At speed and with force it probably had enough force to turn it around really so i dont think it was thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat bad.

There is a slight groove carved into the drop out, and the thread on the axle has worn smooth in a few areas . lol not good.

Right so $13 bucks later i get the wheel back. they didn't replace anything, just gave it a clean it seems and it rolled ... well better.

Right so I'm taking of the bolts that where left on the axle. I had to tighten them both so I could undo them at the same time. After dong this this hub was back to the condition I originally was complaining about :S

Since they didn't replaced anything, they must have serviced it somehow. So how can I.

Here are the best shots i could muster. How do i crack into the cartridge? Should i just start stabbing with screw driver :P I just cant seem any opening in which place to insert crazy tool? Or at least, how do I pour oil all down within her to loosen up her somehow

And whilst I'm at it, why would have over tightening the nuts up against the cartridge case caused it to run fowl again?. I say fowl because the bike in which the wheel belongs to is a "Mallard"

no but seriously

right well in the meantime taping the axle with a mallet freed up the bearings. Others told me I "Pre-loaded" the bearings when I was trying to remove the nuts. Another lesson learned for the bike noob within me.

All in all . Its all back together, wheel spins freely I = Happy Chappy
