The thing I really like about this bike is that it was obviously built on a strict budget but the money was always spent on the most important components, with some older and cheaper components being used in less critical places. I got this for free and have built it up for a friend with such additions as the shifters (originally downtube SIS) which I bought in pieces an rebuilt myself as a first go at rebuilding old STI shifters. I can highly recommend NOT doing this, it is much easier to have pulled them apart yourself!

I finally found a ken evans track frame in my size. very happy.
there is a faint serial number 1943 or 1948 on the champion bb, I sent an email to ken evans and was told it would be a late 70's frame that has been repainted in the early 90's.

finished it off with some spares laying around, superbe pro cranks and 48 chainring, nitto rb021 and some random track wheels.
48 x 19 should be good as a summer commuter.

My Columbus Max "Sugoi". I've heard that originally it had a Campag group set. It has been my commuter for a couple of years, the only upgrades being the seat and wheels.
I am about to strip it with a view to getting the top tube replaced (it has many rust holes in the bottom), and repainted.

I'd be interested in hearing what other paint schemes have been seen on Sugoi's, as I'm not that keen on re-painting in pearlescent black.

Finally finished my Ken a couple of weeks ago. Modern built using Athena groupset.

Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone would have any information on this Kenevans frame I am in the middle of restoring. Mainly if other frames like this have been produced, if it was actually built by Mr. Evans and what year it would be from.

Columbus Air with 700/700 wheels leads me to believe it would be from the early '80s, but the decals and lack of serial number or any distinguishing features are throwing me off. Anyway to the photos:

And some during the restoration for good measure:

Thanks in advance!

^ Jeebus!

Doesn't look like anything Ken would do. Perkins did some crazy gusset frames and Hopkins I think.

Mad frame though!

Love the provision for a rear brake.

Also, that aero tubed stuff was popular in the early 80's, led by Dura-Ace AX which I assume is the seat post.

Interesting, I've got a Sugoi track bike, always thought it was nice but never connected that name with Ken Evans..

Most Kenevans frames built by both Ken and Mal McPherson had a 4 digit serial stamped into the BB shell with the matching serial stamped into the steerer. Yours doesn't have that, nor any pantographing, which makes it a bit harder.

Going off the drilling in the BB shell, it is something that Geoff Scott did, although I've never seen anyone do the drilling in the fork blades like that. Nor have I seen massive gussets like that on any of Geoff's frames. Do you have a picture of the tips? I want to see how they were finished.

In terms of an approximate age, Columbus Air was a tubeset that was around for a very short time. So you can safely assume that it's from the 80s.

Just picked up a Kenevans frame that was stickered as a Blackman. Has Kenevans stamped dropouts and tips, and the squarer style K panto fork crown. Went back through the site here and found some examples, which I had incorrectly called Kotter. Matching 1239 serial number. Helical butting on steerer tube (Columbus type, not Tange), seems to take a 26.8 post.

Anyone know the holder of the Ken Evans build history who could check the serial number records?

It's little and has a few bits of rust on it, lovely frame made from Columbus Genius with internal cabling (frame is like a 52cm or 54cm can't remember), 27.2 seatpost. Make me an offer :-)
