silly question
Postby basscadetz » Thu Jul 31, 2008 3:24 pm
so my girlfriend just told be about a cheap bike she saw at the junk shop down the road, but her desription confuses me, and its closed now so i cant see myself
she doesnt know a whole lot about bikes, and i know very little about avantis, and/or road bikes in general.
she said it was an older 1980's looking avanti, with an italian flag sticker on the seat tube.
light blue, with black scribbley writing on the top tube, that she couldnt remember/decipher. fenders.
is she crazy? an italian flag on an au/nz bike?
sorry for my ignorance, i dont know much about road bikes, but i thought id ask if this sounds familiar to anyone, or is she waaaaay off?

As I curious as I would be - I wouldn't read too much into it until you get a chance to toddle back and have a squiz properly yourself.
It might have been a sticker some over zealous previous owner put there - or even just a cheap marketing ploy of Avanti's way back when.
I don't even recall Avantis being around in the 80s ? I might be wrong though

think of this : if you'd never heard the name before - which nationality would you guess Avanti or even Azzuri to be?
I know when I first found Steinlager beer I was pretty ticked off to then realise it is from Kiwi-land.

ok i went and checked it out, maybe one of you could tell me more?
def says avanti on the downtube in block letters, not the normal logo. on the top tube it has "gino benelli" in cursive writing.
lots of italian flag decals all over the place. they look original.
its lugs arent fancy, but def not generic looking.
ive searched and searched online, cant find anything.
lemme know if this sounds familiar.

well, when i got to the shop, the crazy, AND SMELLY old guy who runs the place, had taken it inside his dark cave of a shop. i asked him if i could take it outside, and have a look in the sun, and he refused. hes quite a rude person, so i didnt bother arguing. waste of breath, etc.
im gonna try and get there tomorrow when its outside, so i can see it.
its probably junk anyway. who knows.

Generally a sign of a fairly consumer-orientated bike, rather than anything of serious prestige. Most professional bikes pre the integrated style levers had their shifters on the down-tube.basscadetz wrote:i DO remember the shifters were on the headset, not the downtube.
You've been building the tension - I'm still curious myself, don't worry
