Track bike needed for film set - Sydney

Postby Johnj » Thu Aug 21, 2014 3:00 pm

I've just had an enquiry from a set designer wanting a track bike, 1920s-30s for a film set in Sydney. It's needed for two weeks from next Monday. They want something nice and shiny, it won't be ridden. Contact details below.

As I said we are after something in near perfect condition, no scratches, or rust etc. do you have anything like that?
Please don't hesitate to call me if you have any further questions.

Cheers Kat

A good idea to use the forum to source props however I highly doubt a collector would hire their prized 'near perfect' 90 year old bike for such a purpose.
Better to 'cheat' more modern bike.

Yes, I tend to agree Mark. I'm also not aware of too many owners of 20s-30s bikes who would restore to immaculate condition. In another email I was told that they wanted a bike that could display like an "artwork".

"I've just taken the Van Gogh down to the powdercoaters, I want it nice and shiny when someone comes to visit."

they pay well, i used to sell diving boards, pool slides and trampolines and often these would be hired out and they would pay well- like they have an endless amount of $$$$$ to throw around. if you have the right bike you could name your price.

Agree with Mark. I was involved with finding a film production company 2 rowing 8's, a couple of tinnies and 16 school rowers for a Japanese beer ad once. I made a grand sitting around in the catering tent and the school made a small fortune for it's trouble. Well worth it if you ask me.

On the other hand, one of my cars was used by a film crew. The director decided he preferred English style number plates on it so stuck 'em on with double sided sticky tape. Removing the plates took a chunk of paint off which they refused to fix - and what I made on the rental didn't cover the cost of repair. Make sure you document the condition of your bike thoroughly and get them to agree to making good any damage - in writing.

Generally, the props guys are really good and super careful, but your mileage may vary.

My perspective is a little different - I collect ancient bikes and I work in the Film & TV industry.
I rented to myself a few bikes for a Alfa Romeo commercial earlier this year.
I looked after the bikes and I made sure I paid myself the going rate. There were no complaints from either party.

That's the one. The three bikes ranged from 1905 to 1948 so they were wildly inaccurate but as props but they looked 'right'.
