If you can't find it... cable bands
Postby Clydesdale Scot » Thu Feb 05, 2015 5:34 pm
I could find some but there were difficulties. The NOS rubber ones I bought and installed on the Spearman are showing clear signs of perishing. It seems pointless to go down that path again.
The reproductions I bought from England (from car and motorbike restoration sites) were unusable as they did not stretch to go around the frame tubes.
Time to have some made, at least whilst I still had some I could use as a template.
Lets look at the Brown Bros 1952 catalogue. Where there were no braze ons there were a few options.

I like the cable bands as they they also hold the cable off the tube and away from the paint, and don't rip your legs like the metal cable clips did.
The metal clips with the screw and nut came later. So not period appropriate (well I care about such things).
Using the ones I had, I scanned and created the vector artwork. This was then converted to a file the 3D router would use to engrave the shape into a aluminium mould.
A local very committed cyclist, Alistair, happens to have a massive 3D router in a purpose built garage and has years of skill and experience to operate it. He is a very easy person to work with, and is good value for money. He did the Malvern Star engraving for the New Look handlebar grips
The mould was finished to a high shine then bead blasted.
There are two sizes, one for the top tube/down tube, and the smaller one for the chainstay.

from there is the casting of the urethane. This was tasked to the local company to do urethane casting using professional grade materials, and curing in an oven. They do my Shockstops. Also very friendly.

To install
Lay the cable in between the two holes, as in the band second from left.
Pull the end with the hole in it through the centre hole (easy to do with a set of long nose pliers, but you can do it with your fingers alone.) as shown in the band third from left.
Wrap the band around the tube and pull the end through the hole. (faster to install than to type this.)
Cable held in place, off the paintwork, and easy to install.

Being urethane they will last a very long time.
I am happy with that.
Let me know if you want any.

So how are you packaging them? As a set or individually priced? I would be up for a couple of sets and maybe some extra chainstay types if available separately.

The funny thing is that I can see a market for this in modern MTB too for running hydro lines and converting frames to fully enclosed gear cables...

I am happy that it is.
So I will go back and get some on order.
I am happy to sell individually to members but will probably sell as a set if and when I put them on e bay.
Now to think of a price (to help recoup the 4 hours of 3D router machining)
Rather proud of this one. I didn't have to call on my brother-in-law or my mate Glen once!
(saving other projects for them)

PM me with numbers required small and large. And let me know how fast you need them, as I will move the ones to go onto 'almost finished projects' up the queue.

As I am mechanically and practically inept, it is my quest to have the period details in place that drives others to despair.
Trying to get an understanding of how to bend fork blades, cast Shockstop bar end plugs and electro-etch brass badges are on my current research and undertake list.

these colours are stable, so can be done to order.old steel Bikes wrote:Are you doing different colours or is this just a special order??

Green bands are darker than shown. Might work on that rich boys Hetchins of yours. The John Bull and Dunlop cable bands came in colours.
