Hi people
I have come across a bike. It was salvaged from a yard where it has been sitting - who knows how long. I dont think it's seen road time in a while
The stickers indicate its a 'Speedwell - gents popular'
Does anyone know much about these bikes. Around when they were made, what gear they were originally fitted with? I gather they were made and assembled in Australia. I haven't found information about this particular bike, other than this post, which doesn't say much.
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=15679&start=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's complete and looks in reasonable condition for its age, though I am not sure how original. It has a single chainring and 6 speed sprocket, 27" steelies, aluminium fenders, white chainguard etc.
Plans for it are to straighten it out mechanically, tidy it all up and get it road riding again, but keep it as original as possible.
If anyone knows anything more about these bikes fire away

Tis in much better nick now
- Serviced front to back (headset, bb, fr/rr hubs), tuned up gears
- Polished up everything that could be polished. The chrome plated 27" steelies came up like new
- New gumwalls and tubes, new chain
- New saddle. The old ballbreaker curved saddle was really no good for the reproductives
total cost about $100. everything else has been left pretty much as is
Rides like an absolute champ

Very nice example of a great looking bike with classic decals. I picked up one like yours a few weeks ago but virtually the polar opposite in condition with lots of patina and surface rust. Gonna do a rat build with it and lace up a SRAM Automatix two speed to it just for fun.
