Hubert Turtill Australian sprint champion

Postby speedster356 » Sun Nov 19, 2017 6:15 pm

Hi all, I've just picked up an vintage roller clock that belonged to Hubert Turtill. It's missing the wooden dial face but the gear drives operate silky smooth. Hubert used this as a promotional tool for his frame building business when he returned back to New Zealand in the mid forties. He would turn up at a venue and then you had the chance to race the great champion on the rollers. I intend to restore the clock, I'll have to manufacture 2 new roller sets but that shouldn't be much of a problem. the existing drive cables are in great condition and are currently soaking in c r c and oil. I also managed to secure his last bike he manufactured.
Here is a great site by Aidrian here in NZ featuring a Turtill pace bike which turns out was once owned by my brother, bugger I wasn't into vintage bike 15 years ago or I'd have that beauty.

Cool H Turtill script done in wire, he also did this on his bikes.

I'm still trying to locate an image of the Turtill clock but it should look something like the one below.

Hell yeah Phil, I'd love to see some original photos. What years did your father run the races? I'm having trouble getting the correct design for the rollers as I can't find any period photos of the Turtill clock in the 40s and 50s. Any images would be great.
here's Huberts last bike he built.

Fantastic story. It'll be great to see your finished work. I too remember the rollers on 'World of Sport' and looked forward to that segment..
