Im a facebook addict and am on a few Retro pages, mainly to buy parts for bike builds.
The fb "advice" pages are ridiculous. People with no experience or credentials offering all sorts of tips. Im on the Bicycle Advice World Wide page just for laughs. If your chain is slipping, you can fix that with a bike fit.
I give and get advice here. We know each other here and we are nice to each other on here, thanks to excellent moderation, something fb does not have.
This is a great site and a great community of really generous people. If Alex or Duck were to charge for their time or professional advice that they give on here, they would be rich.
Facebook is a necessary means of communication but I love BNA.

Joined a couple of the larger facebook groups a couple of weeks ago as a means of gaining an audience for a site I'm working on. The noise and junk posted on them has completely dominated my feed. And some of the soft-porn sexist tripe ... eesh!

I'm a member of bikepacking and touring groups in Oz and NZ.
These groups have a pretty large membership but they must be all serious, sober folk because apart from some lame or misguided attempts at humour, most posters are well-behaved and respectful.
I guess it comes down to who you mix with.

what kind of groups have you been joining?

I'm a member of member of numurous groups, some that i do see some gross language but is very male dominated but on the same token, a motorcycle group i'm on won't tolerate it...as for porn or sexist stuff, I don't really see much if any of that...i'm not a prude or anything but if i find a group where its common place, I simply leave that group.

Think female equivalent of the Polish TT team, in white kit. If it was an Aussie forum they'd get slammed pretty hard, especially by the girls.

My own 2 cents. I used to use Tapatalk on a mobile device for forum access. It also acted as my image hosting, and I could post straight into a thread with photos without having to do anything special.

With the demise of tapatalk on BNA, my usage dropped by about 90%. I don't post images unless they already have an external URL, as it is just too time consuming doing this on the phone. The web interface is not suited to mobile devices, and I constantly battle with not being able to see what I am typing because the window has vanished off the top of the screen somewhere, and the keyboard takes up most of the screen.

That's where Facebook wins. It's easy, and I have a few Cycling related group I am on that use Facebook. Our Cycling club uses a members only group for 95% of club communications, and at work we have even switched to "Workplace", which is just Facebook@Work, and that comes with it's own App on the mobile as well.

So, my forum usage here is now pretty much restricted to Desktop only access, and usually only a couple of times a week on average.

What I dislike about Facebook is the creepy way it tracks you for its databases. It puts cookies into your browser to track what you look at. It has facial recognition which it runs on any photos you upload. As a result I only go into Facebook on private browsing so that the cookies don't remain on my browser. I also post little or nothing on it however I do visit it because I have friends and relatives who post there. I don't join groups on it if there are good equivalents elsewhere such as this forum. I know that there is no such thing as privacy any more and I know I get tracked through other sites and photgraphed on cctv however I do not like it, and don't intend to make it easy for them.

I still call in here to see what's going but I'm away in a truck all week and Tapatalk no longer works here, I find it a pain in the rear end for logging in and navigating plus the uploading of photos to here with the phone. So I mainly wait till I get home at the end of the week and jump onto the pooter but I no longer try and upload pics, it's just takes to long, where with Tapa it was done without clicking here there and everywhere.

I thought I was the only one. It is a pain to log into say flockr etc and post pics.
I am on three forums that allow you to select pics from your computer an it is so simple. Ok you have to size them first. But you do not lose them either.
I have been meaning to make posts here but it is just not as easy.
