Shimano Alivio freehub interface

Postby Mickey1980 » Sun May 13, 2018 10:27 pm

Hi, all,

I have a pair of old wheels with the 7 speed hyperglide freehub (Shimano FH-MC-10 Alivio Parallax).
I want to upgrade to a 8 speed freehub, but the spare one I've got is of a different interface to the hub.

Image of the one I've got on the wheel:

Are these not common anymore?
Is this something to do with road vs MTB?

Also, would I have to re-dish the wheel?

Thanks!

Early to mid 90s MTB stuff, I remember seeing them and noticing the hefty, bigger barrel. There are such things (I think) as Parallax 8/9sp freehubs, but think they were in the Deore line-up, and also I don't know how common/uncommon they are. Will probably need to ask someone more mountain-bikey than me.
For some reason I'm vaguely remembering MC18 but that was in a different context. I'm not certain that this will fit, you'll need to research.

Any reason you particularly want 8sp vs 7sp ?

In any case, you'll need to compare your hub (wheel) to the chart and see which 8/9sp freehubs will fit onto your hub. And yes, will need to dish/re-dish the wheel to do it properly. I'd consider another wheel which has a slightly newer hub format.

Apparently the Parallax stuff was good gear though, for it's time..
Campagnolo for show, SunTour for go
