I found some pages from The Town and Country Journal 1934. Description of Sydney Cricket Ground race featuring Major Taylor.

I think you might mean 1904 - see The Big Sydney Carnival. (13 January 1904) Australian Town and Country Journal p 48

thanks for posting - google tells me population Sydney in 1904 around 500,000 - think that helps put a 20,000(plus) crowd in perspective

Yep, that’s an incredible crowd. I wonder what the crowd numbers would be if a similar event was held now.
