Golden Arrow - bikes released with?

Postby familyguy » Tue Aug 28, 2018 1:33 pm

I'm looking for a project (like I need an excuse), and have a full, clean Golden Arrow groupset to put onto the right bike. Ideally, a frame which I can clean up or tidy to fit this to would be great. Part 1 of this is finding out what models had this groupset and seeing if these appeal/are available.

After going through my Koga Miyata catalogs, these ones appeared new with Golden Arrow (more or less, some parts were subbed):
1983 Roadwinner
1984 Granwinner, Flyer
1985 Roadwinner, Granwinner
1986 Granwinner, Flyer

I know that Peugeot released the Ventoux in Reynolds 501 with the group, but that's all I've dug out so far.

Anyone know of links to other catalogs that might assist?

Jim

It mightn't be the sort of thing you're chasing, Jim; but I have picked up locally a similar era Malvern Star "AL12" mixte frame which was, for the most part, Golden Arrow - sans crank hubs and calipers iirc. Probably not levers either being a flat bar.

Considering the other similar period MS bikes I've picked up & flipped in my time; I was really quite surprised at the finishing quality of this frame, and I've held onto it.

A mixte or townie would probably actually suit this quite well, if a period 'racer' doesn't come up. All fuel for the mental fires...

Various Raleigh bikes in export markets between '83 and '85 had Golden Arrow, I think the Raleigh Team Corsa in '84-85 had it.

edit: I believe Shimano 105 may have been an option as there were also SunTour equipped versions floating around.

Also I vaguely remember reading someone's resto about an '84 Bianchi Rekord which was a Golden Arrow fitment. Not exactly providing you with commonly found options though, sorry.

Nothing by Fuji came with Golden Arrow that I can find. They liked their Suntour a lot.

Yes. Yes they did. One of the reasons I like a 1980s Fuji...

Maybe some Nishiki models ? Although I seem to recall a lot of SunTour on these during the late phases of friction as well...

Nothing Gitane, nothing Gazelle, nothing Nishiki (that I can find). Seems like a pretty narrow group!

Apparently the 84/85 Miyata 310 had Golden Arrow as well

Maybe Miyata/Koga Miyata had the sole rights!

Probably the biggest user, but I have seen on other, non-Miyata bikes being the Raleigh Team Corsa on which it was an option (or SunTour) and others. That being said, a Miyata is a good option for a build.

Wondering now about Centurion or even Panasonic bikes.
