I have nothing valuable to add here other than this thread is a very interesting thread. I didn't see it coming.

Brett3938 came in with a sort of out there question and seemed a bit "green" and perhaps looking for information without due respect to the members knowledge here and was laughing a lot, out loud. I was wrong. Not only has he posted great photos (I'm a Luddite and won't post photos ) he has obviously done his research, listened to people with far greater knowledge than me and as he has admitted more knowledge than himself, then asked a few more questions and is now getting some great information.

What appaered to be "just a bike", obviously of some quality, but not necessarily something that everyone here would give an organ for, has generated great interest, informed comments and a mystery is being solved.

More importantly Brett3938 now may be riding a bike to work with a bit of a story and a great bike.

Well done to the various know it alls here who have made this good fun.

Ride safely everyone.

What we have here is a frame built by an iconic Australian frame builder, which has been resprayed and restickered as something else. Why someone would take a Ferrari, paint it a different colour and badge it as a Hyundai is beyond me. Its provenance is beyond doubt, it is clearly a Kerry Hopkins.
You can have this frame repainted in the original light blue and have the Kerry Hopkins decals put on it (Cyclomondo has them). That will set you back about $200. Put a nice matching groupset on it and you have a real head turning bike, you can ride it, hang it on a wall, put it in bike shows ...you have a piece of history, of art.
You're a car man Brett, if you find an A9X which is rust free, original engine but needs paint and upholstery, you fix it. You dont use it as your daily driver because its too special for that.
You could just ride this bike ... but I would repaint it and get Kerry Hopkins name back on it, because its a famous name.
You're a lucky bloke. You hear about people buying a painting for $5 at a garage sale and then discovering it is an old master. It happens, but only to the lucky few.

Thanks everyone of the help so far and the kind words i did not know what to expect when i started this thread as not having to much knowledge at all about bikes but with everybody's help i have been able to find out a lot about this bike and its not just some old bike now i will be restoring it to the original painting color and getting the Kerry hopkins name back one it as i still dont know why it has been painted like it is and had the Hadley stickers put on it. Thanks again everyone for sharing your experience and knowledge with me

In regards to the painter, Kerry did paint some of his own frames/repaired frames. However the black marker looks like it was done by the other painter at the time, Sydney Cycle Works. Joe Cosgrove(Brisbane) was not local to Kerry(Sydney), so I doubt Joe painted any of Kerry’s frames.

EDIT: Kerry worked at Sydney Cycle Works. They were apparently the best priced.

You can see similar marks on the ones here. I believe both are built by the same builder, neither of which were Jim Bundy.

^ Doesn't appear to be any rifling on the inside of the seat tube, so not SLX, SPX or TSX.

Any luck with contacting Kerry?

(On a side note; amazing how much gunk gets into the BB shell with the cutout, which is meant to get the water out!)

Nice pick up, although I'd be a bit worried if you're riding with that much seat post happening.

That mate is a chain hanger. You hang the chain on it when you remove the rear wheel, to fix a puncture for example.

Looking good, Brett!

While you’ve got the chance, weigh the bare frame and fork and post your findings here: http://www.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewt ... Bare+frame

The headset races can be tapped out, too.

Ok will do that and put up what it is and thanks. dont think i need to take out the headset race as its not chrome and needs to be painted any way if you talking about the ball race on the bottom of the head stem

Nice frame Brett and good to see you giving it what its deserves. I would remove headset race before paint, as its a bit like respraying a car with all the chrome on but only masking the glass  . She will probably deserve a new headset once painted. Mate there is nothing like restoring an old frame and throwing some modern running gear on........ your new bike will be gathering wobwebs.

^ I admire your diligence, but I think we can safely say it’s a Hopkins based on the evidence at hand.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; that fork is a thing of beauty.
