frame ID ?

Postby silverlight » Tue Nov 04, 2008 4:21 am

hi All
I recently picked up this frame and hoping someone could recognize the lugwork or the decal style (no holes for a badge but possibily decal placed later in life) but the frame has Accles and Pollock on the fork steerer and what i can gather was B grade quality going by the stamp and believe its English tubing. Brampton bottom bracket and a host of other qualities that this frame offered that i couldnt resist. Chrome has been painted silver in the past on forks and 1/2 rear stays although i doubt original chrome as its too good to have survived all this time.
any help would be most welcomed.
thanks and happy riding

I have no idea what it is but I can see why you couldn't resist it. It does look English and of a certain quality.

Have you looked up "Classic Lightweights UK" website? I don't think it is a lightweight though. Perhaps the shape of the badge shaddow may be something to look for.

My eyes may be deceiving me but are the front forks round in section (like on track bikes)?

Good luck with your search,

Gary.

Hmmm - something very familiar about the shape of that badge/decal shadow.

Cannot quite place it yet but I am working on it!

Definitely British. My Dad worked for Tubes Investments a holding company that at one time owned the specialist Tube manufactuers Accles and Pollock and indeed most of the remnants of the bike industry (Raleigh, BSA,Sun,Carlton etc.) Within Tubes Investments Reynolds was known for for its varous steels (531 etc) but accles and pollock were renowned as super spcialis tube manufacturers, especially superfine tubes.

Accles and Pollock were competitors for Reynolds before TI took them over or Reynolds bought them out. Not sure which. A&P SAQ was a 4130 type chrome moly tubing competitive with Reynolds 531. SAQ means "Seamless A Quality" I think that the "Quality" reference was to the gauge and/or any butting of the tubes. If it is marked B it will be thicker, but also may not even be seamless. May even be a different alloy. Check the size of the seat pin.

The shadow of the badge is stirring something in my brain. Looks like a Castle at the top part. There once was a brand I think called Robin Hood. Made in Nottingham would you believe? Later taken over/bought out by Raleigh? Guessing.

Enjoy. Nice pickup. With those front ends could be pre 1940s.
