I'm looking at getting into riding, and as the title states I'm after a bike that will do the job.
I would be doing some road riding, and also some XC riding, and I want a good bike that will be comfortable, safe and reliable for both applications. I think a hardtail would best suit me?
Brisbane area please!
Bike must be available to 'test ride'
Looking to spend up to about $800...
Cheers.
After further research, I think I want either a Giant (Talon or Alias), or an Avanti (Aggressor or Hammer). Basically, I want a HT mountain bike with a solid frame, decent front forks, good derailleurs and gearset, and hydraulic disc brakes.

You need to give some indication of what size you are after. That is by far the most important factor when choosing a bike. A wrong-sized bike is a recipe for injury.
It's outside your stated budget, but you might have a look at this: seems liek areasonable deal.

Have you found a bike yet? I'm selling a 2009 model all black Giant alias, I am 178cm aswell and the bike is a medium, it is decked out with bar ends, full front and rear lights, wireless speedometer. It has done less than 500kms on road only.
If your interested still or no anyone who is write back please.
Cheers
