Reminder - Protect yourself against fraud

Postby AUbicycles » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:18 pm

As a rule of thumb, a member with a lot of posts (eg 500+) more more likely to be trustworthy than a member with 20 posts. It is still no guarantee though a good indicator of whether a seller or buyer needs to be treated with more caution.

Some questions to ask in a transaction.

1. - Can you organise payment on receipt of goods or use a payment system that allows reverse charges or is a truehand?

2. - Courier Beware. Some couriers (or fake couriers) pickup goods and won't reveal to where it was delivered - should you use the buyers courier company before you receive payment? Other couriers are non-existant in delivering something to you, should you pay-up before receiving?
(I realise that this is ambiguous, hence refer to 1.)

3. What do you know about the seller, mobiles and email addresses can be discarded but a street address is harder (though not impossible) to falsify.

PROTECT YOURSELF

While Bicycles Network Australia will pass on details it has in the case of a fraud or suspected fraud, this may not always be sufficient to track down an individual and start legal proceedings.

As a member to member forum... and not a commercial forum, this format has worked very well, but it still attracts bad people. I have help resolved a number of differences and when we ca ensure that there is no financial loss, this is an acceptable solution. However there is an increase in cases where goods aren't sent (after payment) or payment problems which leave on party out of pocket.

While the transaction is between the buyers and seller, BNA still wants you to have a good transaction recommend the following common sense guides to help protect yourself:

1. Get the complete details of the seller / buyer.
There is some anonymity in the forum participation, but when it comes to a transaction and money, there is no reason why you can't know who you are dealing with. An honest buyer and seller should be able to share their key contact details and if they wont, then it could be risky. Get the phone number, home address and email.

2. Safe Payment
Cash in hand on pick-up or Paypal provide security, with paypal a fraudulent transaction can usually be disputed and reversed. With a bank transfer you may not be able get the payment returned.

3. Send a friend[b]
For higher value transactions where you can't pickup, do you have a trusted friend who can inspect and pay/pickup for you?

[b]4. Courteous seller

Be responsive, let the buyer know when payment has been received, let them know when you are planning to send and let them know the tracking number or other postal details.

5. Reputation
A buyer / seller with a lot of posts and who has been a registered member for a longer time will likely be more trustworthy. Click on the buyer / seller profile and see how many positive sales they have completed. See what kind of personality they have, a trouble-maker or a an enthusiastic participant.

Finally, if you have caused a problem or delay, do your best to inform and resolve this.
