WTB [Mel] - clunker

Postby sunho » Fri Mar 15, 2013 7:48 am

Hi Melbournians.
Want to borrow rather than buy... If I buy I'll probably resell it within a few days.

Sydney guy coming down for the weekend.
Just wanted to borrow someone's clunker, i can bring a lock if necessary, happy to pay a deposit or whatever if you guys dont trust me but i just want a ride from Sat-Wed.
as long it has 2 wheels and can stop im happy with that... helmet is a plus, otherwise i will bring that too.

Let me know what works!
I have some mates who might also be interested but I will start with one.

im about 6'2 187cm

Please PM me if you are willing by this friday.
Cheers,
David

If you've got a coupla hundred spare, get a 'clunker' at Reid Bicycles in North Melbourne, and insist they build and service it properly before you walk out the door with it

Also, there are $5 Bikeshare helmets from 7/11 so you don't need to bring yours if you don't want to.

I take it you don't have a clunker to lend, then?
sunho wrote:....happy to pay a deposit or whatever....

There's always the Melbourne Bike Hire Scheme or whatever it is called. Or sunho might like to try back2bikes.com.au or CERES Bike Shed or any other number of volunteer bike charity organisations around. They might be happy to lend or hire out bikes cheaply. There may be a listing on Bicycle Network Victoria's website

Using the Melbourne BikeShare Scheme bikes is a great idea, if you're already looking at clunkers anyway. And it'd be really cheap. You might even be able to hire it for more than one day at a time (so not have to take it back to a bay every day) and then just drop it back off at a bay at the end of your trip. Of course you're not going to be winning any races with it but it is a really good suggestion to keep you on a bike while you're here.

I think the Bikeshare thing gets expensive if you want to keep it for more than a few hours, as they are trying to encourage short term usage. CERES is a good idea I think, but may not be as quick to set up as the OP wants.

The Humble Vintage; great business, not too exy, stylish and fun.

Little Creatures also hire out bikes for free, but I'm not sure how it works exactly. I don't think you could take one for the whole weekend.

I'm sorry my loaner bike is already out.

Of course not. I'm in Brisbane, but I suspect you know that. Just thought it was pretty obvious sunho doesn't want to buy a bike for just a week - the specific mention that he'd just have to sell after a few days sort of reinforces that, for me.

Typical forum responses I guess. We're on to bikeshare already, when all the guy wants to do is borrow a bike & helmet from someone. So, in the spirit of irrelevance - Dave, just buy a new Bianchi instead. Or transport a groupset with you - quick WTB for a frame & wheelset perhaps? Sorry for trashing your thread.

Maybe bump your for sale thread and offer delivery to Melb if someone has a clunker to lend you? Esp for the tiny Raleigh frame, which might cost a bit to post.

Well, he did say he wanted a clunker and you can't get more clunkier than the BikeShare bikes. It is a legitimate suggestion and they are readily available (although obviously I didn't know about BikeShare pricing after a few hours of use). No hassle on re-sale afterwards either. And the helmet is a $5 tourist memento for use when he returns from whence he came or to re-gift if the need arises. These helmets seem to be all the rage in Melbourne with a fair few of the non-BikeShare commuters using them, that I've seen. A collectible!

Looks like the OP got the advice wanted re CERES and the others so I think this thread did its job with no trash thrown in.

And now he gets a forum clunker loaned too!

Dan. When someone uses the terms "happy to pay" and "whatever" in the same sentence, this says to me they are "happy to pay whatever"

I don't know of many people generous enough to lend out bikes to visitors from interstate willy-nilly. Maybe I need to get out a bit more!

And WTB stands for.....?

Enjoy Melbourne, sunho! :)

Everything's good for Sunho, we'll leave it at that thanks.
