Don't like your chances... Tubular: yes, clincher rims: no. Clinchers weren't really around when 40 hole hubs were in vogue, at least not in lightweight parts that you'd want to ride these days, or that anyone would have bothered to keep around for this long.

you can lace a 40h hub to a 36h rim. Sheldon knows, his example is 36/28 but it should be similar calculations for a 40/36 mismatch
Ever since the vasectomy...I mostly ride fixed.
I'm pretty sure Velocity had an odd 40h Deep V along with a 30h in their email to dealers the other day.
i actually have a campag omega 40 h rim on a track wheel, actually laced to a low flange airlite hub which is about good for not much and I will cur the hub and off load it if anyone is interested.
