Are you having trouble getting the upshift button to engage? I had that exact problem with my early 90's MTB with the same groupset but managed to fix it by shooting some light lube into the mechanism. They are known to get "sticky".

Just wondering, how many different standards of 7 speed indexed shifters are there for Shimano? For the said RapidFire LX system, what modern/later day 7 speed shifters are compatible with it?
