PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSI'm making the change from cottered cranks to cotterless but there is a plethora of options. I'd like to retain the bottom bracket bearings that i have but need the crankshaft to be compatible.
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSwhy?
Just get a new cartridge BB like this and be done with all the fiddling around. ![]() They are about $20 - $25 at your LBS. Andrew
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSThe $25 price tag has me somewhat relieved. I am going to have a go at a modernised roadster, and I will be going over to cotterless cranks for that project.

Very neat, cheap... best idea so far!!
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSI would still like to pursue retaining stronglight bearings.
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSOk All,
How do you convert an old non threaded Malvern Star bb to one of these sealed bearings Cheers Solocmv.
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSYou can get self-tightening (expanding) bottom-brackets - they are designed to fit into frames with damaged threads.

Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESS
Just be aware that the thread length in the bottom bracket shell may not be long enough. Some fitting may be required!
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESSif its a one piece BB just buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BMX-BB-Adapter-Convertor-Standard-MTB-BB-/220699885457?pt=AU_Sport_Cycling_Parts&hash=item3362bcff91
just go to your LBS or grab one of ebay. use a drift to bang out the bearing cups and BAM bobs your uncle (funny thing is my uncle is a bob)
Prior Preparation.....
What kind of bike do you have now, and what is the bottom bracket shell width (frame only, not the existing cups) ?. Eric. Newer does not automatically mean betterer.
Re: PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESS
Will one of these do it ? http://www.bike-parts-plus-more.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=37344 They have a range of spindle widths listed. 1.370" x 24 tpi - what sort of stupid standard is that?
