No red tape, can't you see there is a strict colour code going on here.

They're just cheap Quando hubs. Nothing spesh. I have spent somewhere in the $500 - $600 park from go to whoa.

The red tape was a joke... :? ...they're bullhorns...red tape for blood...like you gored somebody...sigh...nobody gets my jokes...I think they're funny...a bit obtuse perhaps...

I actually did laugh a little now you explained. I probably laughed more at the word obtuse when I thought of that scene from Shawshank Redemption when Andy's playing the record over the prison P.A. system.

HAHAHAHAHA that was the reference! OMGosh someone got one. Shawshank is in my top 10, my favourite line is still, "Do you trust your wife?". The look on everyone's faces still makes me chuckle.

I think this miscommunication is that you said you were "going to use Quando hubs", sounding like you were going to build wheels with Quando hubs for your fixed gear. Did you maybe mean you were buying the same Stars Circles wheels (complete) that I have?

Honestly, I will probably end up buying some Velocity's when I have more money. The Stars are ok for the money, but they're heavy and just don't look very durable.

Yes!Yes! Sorry...
On my fixed gear build I will use STARS and then maybe upgrade to something fancier later when I have a few more $.
Are STARS ok for first wheels though?

That would be my suggestion too. The Stars are ok, but I think if you bump a few gutters and hit a few pot holes they won't last long. And like I said, they're heavy. I was just being cheap when I started my build, but I kind of regret it now. If you're in Melbourne there are a few places that sell second handy's with flip flop hubs and the like. All just depends on what you want to achieve at the end of the day.

Ok. thanks. Just to let you know though I am on a VERY limited budget but I have tallied all the costs up and I think I will still be able to go ahead with the build.

Don't forget that you could just go single speed instead of fixed. Give those legs muscles some time to build up. Any old freewheel based set of wheels (27" or 700C) could then be used. Should be able to get these dirt cheap/ free. Save your money and buy some nice wheels down the track with a flip-flop or some such.

Wow. I thought about that but dismissed the idea thinking it was to hard. How would I do this? Would I just screw a freewheel onto the existing road wheels and ride away or is it harder then this?

Depends. I did one yesterday that i just screwed on a single speed freewheel and it happened to line of with one of the front chainrings on my crankset. Worst case scenario is that the rear wheel has to be redished. This is a small job for any bike shop, should cost peanuts, or just do it yourself if you can.

Most times going single speed is quick and easy. If you have a set of wheels around that are for a cassette, you also have an easy option. Just buy a set of spacers and go nuts. Fine tuning chainline is very easy this way as well.

Ah ha ha. Yeah, my thread has been hijacked. The painting topic sort of fizzled once I posted my before and afters.

I think you put spacers between the fixed wheel and the hub to make it space out a bit... correct me if I am wrong.

Sorry dude, I'm no good with kids. Maybe post this question in the Cycling Health forum?

As far as aligning the chain line, when I out mine together it was out a bit and I corrected it by moving the chain ring from outer side to the inside of the crank spider. This may be enough to get you out of trouble. If you have a decent set of wheels I understand that shimming the sprocket is a possibility. With cheaper wheels, such as my Stars Circles this isn't an option.
