Thought I'd better give a bit of an unpdate on happenings and also bump up my posts so I can add some pictures. The frame is stripped of all it's paint which revealed a few dings and nicks in the steel underneath. It'll be going to visit Damhooligan soon for a spray job in a nice lime green with matt finish. I also swapped the original 27" flat crown forks for some slightly shorter ones with a slopping crown that will allow for a shorter reach caliper. My STARScircle rims arrived the other day and it is true when they say you get what you pay for. They'll do for now until I can afford some nicer Deep Vee's. I'll run some Schwalbe folding rubber over the top of those in green. I have some white Tec9 46T, 170mm cranks in the mail now and also a polished alloy quill stem to go with my chrome bullhorns. The last decision I have pending at the moment is whether I run a white Dia Compe or a nice polished aluminum Tektro caliper on the front and then what lever to run with it. Other than that I think everything is covered. A normal sorta seat post and most likely a Velo urban leather look white saddle. Oh, and I have a pair of Velo pedals and chrome cages and white leather double straps on the way. It all looks good in my head, we'll see once it's assembled.
Am I missing anything?

Buy a spraycan, don't bother sanding the bike or masking up anything.EvilGenius wrote:Does anyone have a really cheap way to paint an old bike up that you could do yourself?
then just spray the content of the can onto the bike.
total costs about 10 dollars.
That would be the cheapest way to paint your bike.

Always find a way of doing the best job you can (not the cheapest) ... but ALWAYS be comfortable with your decision. Not every bike is perfection. There will always be someone who thinks you could have done it 'better'. Just ensure that their 'better' is your 'different'. The only thing that matters is how YOU feel when riding her and how proud YOU feel looking at her outside the coffee shop. No-one else's opinion matters ... apart from SWMBO ... maybe.surfin' addiction wrote:The only places I know of are out in the eastern suburbs. I think if you read between the lines in this topic, most people have suggested a good spray job over a cheap job or powder coating. But there are definately places out there. There is a place called A Class Powder Coaters in Moorabin if you want to travel.

Try "ARVEX" in Huntingdale. I've heard good things.

So here's the photos I have so far from start to finish. I am a bit disappointed with the photos of the frame as they really don't do the colour justice. I might have to get some outside during the day. Thanks to DH for the spray job. I'm really pleased with the colour, the finish and the look overall. I just have to wait on a few more parts now and I'll be spinning.
So this is how it was when I 'obtained' it from the tip.
It's stamped on the bottom 'Wool Worths Aust'. Can anyone shed any light on that?
Just thought I'd sit everything together and see how it looked.
I think this photo is maybe a little more true to the colour.
So there you go. Let me know what you think. There will be more photos as I put it together.

I have seen a few unicolour frames now (i.e. lugs and tubes same colour) and think they look smashing with some hand-painted pinstriping around the lugs. You thinking of going down this route?
Gratz on bringing a bike back to life. Nothing quiet like that first ride when you realise you have jsut saved something from the scrapheap and made it a fuctional tool once more.

"Road King" was the Big W house brand bike. Shimano components, steel bars, headset, seatpost, wheels and the heaviest bicycle rack ever made, all shown in it's glory in the "before" shot above. Made out of hi-tensile steel. K-mart sold a very similar bike called "Road Master".
I had one when I was a teenager. It was... tough. Looks nice powder coated!
but really, that's rubbish. We get none of it because the choices are illusory.

Nah, just the single colour. I am more about plain and simple. I have however seen some frames done up as you described and they do look good, but not for me. Maybe later on I may do another build and get a bit more 'wild'.yehuwdiy wrote:I have seen a few unicolour frames now (i.e. lugs and tubes same colour) and think they look smashing with some hand-painted pinstriping around the lugs. Thanks for the history lesson Drubie, I'll have to keep that in the back of my mind for when people ask me for 'it's story'. Better not let DH hear you say powder coated either. He might get a bit upset.drubie wrote:I can shed light on the origins of the frame.

I'm the ignorant one - I didn't read the thread, just skimmed the pictures, saw the question about the good ol' Road King.damhooligan wrote:ignorance is bliss , i wil just pretend i didn't hear or read that...surfin' addiction wrote:. didn't realise it was one of yours damhooligan - all the more reason for me to finish boxing up my bike and sending it to you. It looks far nicer than when it came out of the factory.
