Advice re wheel spacing

Postby yehuwdiy » Thu Sep 02, 2010 7:23 am

Howdy Pilgrims,

Well, I have finally decided to bit the bulet and actually spend some money on bike bits (I usually just scrounge and adapt). Specifically I have decided to buy a set of flip-flop Velocity Dyad rims.

However, I am unsure as to what spacing to order. The problem is that I am a dedicated steel frame-with-lugs guy. I ride old frames (usually road, have never managed to scrounge a track/ single speed frame) and I love it. So, do I order 120mm spacing or 126mm spacing???

This is the $450 question (unless someone in or near Canberra wants to sell me a set cheaper!).

Any an all comments/ ideas/ offers welcome :)

120 will fit into 126 with some spacers, and will fit perfectly once you find a 120 track frame someday. Wont work the other way around, well it will, but you'll need to stretch the frame.

IMO, go the 120, as you can always get spacers/longer axle if need be.

Thanks for that.

Yeah I was thinking much the same thing, just wasn't sure if there were any trade-offs (in terms of axle strength) when using spacers. I'm about 90kg with a backpack full of stuff!

If you are steel anyway, just cold set them to 120mm.
