anyhoot.... its uncool to care. As long as u are comfy in jeans, lycra, spandex or overalls... riding fixed, road, penny farthing or a dragster.... people are cycling which is great!

i'm amazed to see the number of hipsters complete with hipster uniform, including skinny jeans and ironic moustache riding fixies. it's past the point where they have become a parody of themselves, but this appears to act as no deterrent.

don't get me wrong, i'm not hipster bashing, i'm all for live-and-let-live, but it's still kind of amusing to see that they aren't perturbed by the sniggering. maybe that actually makes them cool?

Now some of the hipsters must be riding crappy cheapy bikes, but some of them will have good bikes... and when the trend dies - will there be good value fixies/ss on the market for the real cyclists?

Will there be a convert back to road bike trend?

Being over in Europe - I am seeing a lot more retro road bikes now, taking over from fixes, and of interest, a lot of women on the retro road bikes. A lot of the bikes are simply from the 80s, out of the cellar and dusted off - though just like a fixie, for everyday riding are not as comfortable as a city bike - but cool in an 80s type of way.

Lol, yeah there's thousands. The older and nastier they are the better (as long as they actually ride that is). It's funny actually as people there attach flags or wrap things around their bikes so they can find them later.

I had a nice 20km cruise around northern Holland when I was there in July visiting family. Wanted to do a longer ride but I was with my family who aren't strong cyclists and we were riding these heavy Dutch bikes which only had 3 gears and were a PITA to ride.

In regards to making your bike less desirable, I have been thinking of getting some sort of blue/purple painters tape (low adhesive so removable) to wrap my frame with to cover the branding and make it look crap. Haven't committed to it yet as I have a ABUS u-lock keeping it safe anyway.

My answer to this is neither - though I am still interested in the trend in cycling.

When I was in Germany a few weeks ago I noticed that the majority of people ride crappy older bikes. It was quite rare to see a modern urban/road bike.

Cycling is more functional (purpose orientated) and integrated into the culture whereas in Australia cycling is more often for sport or recreation. If you are on the right streets early in the morning - you will see your road cyclists heading out of town, or in the evenings notice the hipsters cruising around.

Its bleeding obvious...all this hipster hating is simply skinny jean envy. The people that don't like the hipsters on their fixies in skinny jeans are the old blokes who can no longer fit into skinny jeans. Its the same as middle aged Mums who stand around slagging off the younger Mum's at school gates.

What would you prefer to see? Those middle aged CEO's riding road bikes in lycra with their beer bellies sticking out (but safely covered in lyrca), or those middle aged CEO's riding a fixie in skinny jeans with the hairy muffin top and even hairier beer belly in full view? Stay on the road bikes lads!

Subjective. I have seen some horrible looking fixies, and I have also seen some beautiful ones (check out the gallery).

Same deal with road bikes.

Oh dear. My regular road rides 30 - 60ks are on a fixie. I wear nicks a helmet and clipless. I guess I'm in the enviable position of being hated by everyone.

I seem to remember 80s road bikes with some pretty garish colour schemes. Personally I'm all for personalising bikes. Both of my bikes I've built myself and they are unique. I'd rather see a hipster on an outrageous fixie than a boring old hybrid/mountain bike commuter any day.

Don't knock the MAMILs. They keep LBSes afloat.

That's kind of like it, but too much stuff matches. I've seen far worse than that.

Garish and bright is one thing, the visual equivalent of a puked up big-night out is another. Aaron, your bikes are proof that someone can build a fixie and make it look like there's some respect for the bike.

And yes, I'm expressing my opinion. I'm not telling people what I should or shouldn't do with their bikes. Some people can't stand the 80s flouro paint jobs, the 90s paint splatter paint jobs or the airbrushed whackiness of some high end Colnagos, for example. It takes all kinds to make a world, people can dig what they want and that's cool.

And to show that I'm not just a critic, here's my road single speed...



I'm happy to cop criticism for the aesthetics of it because I dig it and I don't care what anyone else thinks.
