The place for fixies and other rides without gears

Have been ogling the Masi Commuter. http://www.masibikes.com/fixed/speciale-commuter/ Light Touring/Randonneur frame, single speed with flip-flop (but no fixed cog, would have to add one). Could easily convert back to gears later if needed, or even have an alternate hub with an Alfine 11 speed for a variant tourer. I have an almost perfectly flat commute, but looking for something a bit more fun on the road than the MTB, and perhaps a bit more heel clearance for panniers. What does anyone think about one of them?

I have the Speciale Randonneur which I have been commuting on and love it. It is very well build, feels solid and is a very nice ride. I had a lot of plans to customise but it's so good I have not bothered. I have just put on lights and a bike computer. That's it.

Yes. That's fueling the n+1 issue. I'm in Sydney though, so would have to buy it unseen, hence the question. How do you find the short top tube? That's the thing I would be concerned about in terms of fit. Otherwise I think 56 cm is OK for me (178cm, but with short legs, long body and arms.)

I would have to double check but I think my top tube is longer than my old bike. I ride a 58cm frame and the geometry seems perfect for me. Is the CX the same frame geometry as the Commuter? You should be able to test ride a CX in Sydney to see if the frame geometry suits. I was lucky I guess. I bought mine sight unseen from Sydney over the net and it was perfect out of the box.

The commuter is the randonneur frame, just configured as a single speed. Still has the cable routing for the derailleur and the hanger.
How tall are you on the 58cm there?

I suspect the 56cm is about right for me. My mate's roadie is about right, and it's 56cm. I'm short of leg and long of body, so usually end up being told to go up a size and drop the seat a bit.

I have the Fixed Drop, and its a fantastic bike - had it for about 1.5yrs now, and I still love it - ride it nearly every day to work and back. Worth every cent.

Bah. Legislate Jeff Kennett style. Push it through and then shred all related documents when the showtime hits the fan.
