Ive been looking at these:

http://www.sturmey-archer.com/products/hubs/cid/7/id/57

The bugs biting and im seriously considering building a wheel with one in. If I ran a 19 tooth cog rather than a 17t freewheel hills would be really easy and then on the flats I could crank it right up in overdrive.

Does anyone know how strong they are? Would it handle a big bloke mashing on the pedals uphills?

Yes. Should be bulletproof. A lot of the internals are similar to the old AW hub
