Vitus Basic SS

Postby slidetaker » Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:19 pm

Hey yall,

NOS Vitus Basic alloy road frame. 130mm rear spacing with semi vertical dropout. Naturally went with road wheels and hub spacers (bonus perfect chainline) :D
RS10 wheels, Sugino generic crank 52T with 16T rear sprocket. Cheap, light and fast.

For those wondering about the semi vertical dropout, it works to get chain tension. There is about 9mm of effective dropout length for the skewer nut to get full bite. It is roughly 30 degree off the true vertical line.

I have a similar frame .According to the long black sticker near the chain I had always assumed it was made in France. However someone told me today they were made in Taiwan !! Any comments ?

I got it as a NOS bare frame and fork from a local bike shop and built it up myself.

My bike also had the long black sticker at the stays with "Made in France" wording. The bike shop owner told me that it was around early 90s, so this would be before any Vitus production in Taiwan.

Nevertheless, I don't care if it is even made in Taiwan. It is a fast and responsive bike. I enjoy riding it very much although I haven't ridden it as much as I like.

Hi All - my very first post! I recently bought what I believe is a Vitus basic frame just like this one.. I'm hoping to put a 10 speed group on it but I'm missing my rear derailleur hanger and they are apparently rare as hen's teeth. Do you happen to know anything about them? Even a bike shop that might have an idea (my LBS had nada!)? Or even better still a picture/ model number/ one for sale! thanks vm.. your bike looks great btw :D

The picture may be your best best - along with info from enthusiasts.

There is an online retailer (in the US) that just sell derailleurs and generally have bike name and models - so would be worthwhile looking into. This is their range of Vitus derailleur hangers: http://derailleurhanger.com/vitus.htm

Hi 180_db, I will take some close up pics of the hanger for you tonight. Also see if I can find some number.

My Vitus is running 8 speeds now...

One very last request.. it would be awesome to see a shot from the rear end of the bike through the spokes to see the shape of the back of the hanger.. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out on this! cheers :)

Slidetaker thanks again you really are a legend - thought I would save you the trouble of taking your wheel off as the good folks at soshanger.com have come through with the goods! For anyone else that comes across this thread the hanger is a Pilo D499..! Happy riding and thanks to the cycling gods for smiling on me this time around :-)
