it was bound to happen

Postby tallywhacker » Tue May 21, 2013 2:24 pm

halfway to work today pulled on the brake and all I get is a ping and then nothing. Fortunately I was on a flat section. I was riding with my wife and she made it quite clear that I wasn't finishing my full ride or riding home with no brakes. My fault I suppose, the only maintenance the bike gets is the tyres pumped up and the occasional bit of oil on the chain. So, if you use only a front brake maybe change the cable a bit more often than every 5 years.

Welcome to the club.

Mine happened last week:

(Yes, that is the entire front caliper brake flying off)

Entirely my fault for knowing zilch about the bike and just thinking pumping up the tyres, squirting lube on the chain and wiping down the frame every now and again was sufficient. Lesson has been learnt.

At least I have a rear brake as well (not a single speed/fixie), not that the rear is much help in stopping fast.
