My first build thread

Postby J_L_C » Sat Mar 01, 2014 10:01 pm

Hi guys,
This is my first single speed build, and my first build at all:)
It started with a $20 kabuki submariner frame from early 70's (I think).
This was my first project of something like this and Im still progressing through it.
I will be doing it black with red accents (ie. bar tape, pedals etc.)
I will update this as often as I can and hopefully have finished in a few weeks.

Thanks Jordan

Got some more work done over the past few days.
Everything had slowed down due to an old bottom bracket cup that decided it didnt want to come off.
Finally got it off in the end it came down to an angle grinder.
And then I started to look at my frame closer and realised just how much rust there was, and it wouldnt come off with sand paper.
So I used a dremel tool with a sander attachment which worked a treat.
It still took a while but did rather a good job. Definately just going to send it to the sandblasters next time :)

Looks like you have some parts of the old bottom bracket assembly still in place. I would be expect to be seeing bare threads inside the BB shell part of the frame otherwise.

They kind of look like 1 piece crank bearing cups to me, but from the pre-strip down pics, that doesn't seem the case. The BB shell looks too small to be 1 piece set up as well.... Hmmm...

Whereabouts in Perth are you? I may have some bibs & bobs to help you out.

If you haven't turfed the original brake hardware, I might be interested cos I am chasing a couple of cable hangers for a restoration build. Hangers centralise the brake cable path to the old style centre pull brake calipers this bike had. The one at the front bolts in under the headset lock nut, at the rear one hangs off of the seatpost clamp bolt.

Hey guys,

Better progress today, done the primer under coat and one layer of black overcoat. Hoping to be finishing paint soon with the rest of black layers then finishing with clear coat. Hopefully wont be too long now and I will have my first build complete, and ride my first single speed :)

Nice one. Good to see the headbadge still too.
Rim tape aint hard - you've just got to concentrate a bit.

I bet you're already dreaming & scheming about your next build though? ;)
