What gearing is on your SS mountain?

Postby pedal.roll » Wed Jul 02, 2014 10:34 am

Hey all,

Just wondering what everyone is running on their mountain bikes. What gearing and freewheel/cassette and cranks/sprocket?

I run 17-33 on my Karate Monkey. Changing it to 16-33 soon because I spin out way too much on the flats when riding around town.

My set up is stock so Fire-X cranks and superfantastic Shimano freewheel(soon to be White Industries).

Trying to work out what cranks to upgrade to.....thinking White Industries Eno or maybe Profile BMX cranks.

Cheers all!

34x20 or 34x18 on my 29er. 20t for general cruising around, xc racing, etc. 18t for longer rides with more flat ground.

On my GT Peace 9r, I've run 32:18, 32:17 and 32:16 and am currently on 38:18.

The 32:18 was fine for the dirt, but I prefer more cush in my dirt rides so stick with the Pivot 429C for that.

As I mainly use the GT for commuting, I upped the gearing to it's current 38:18 and will soon be going to 38:17.

32x17... but it's never been anywhere especially technical. Fire/Service Roads only really to date. May need something lower should I get more adventurous

Cannot remember the exact teeth numbers I used to use, but the GI for MTBing for me was around 55~58 GI whether on the 26 or 29er. Haven't MTB SS'd since I had to give up cycling 2 years ago, but I have returned to bike path commuting on an SS cruiser bike, must admit no idea of the teeth numbers or GI, I just know I walk up the hills. My fixie commuter had a GI of 78 which was sensational I found. Probably never MTB SS ever again due to some injuries that resulted in a total knee reconstruction, but you never know. I'd really like to get back to MTB and SSing MTB as it is just so liberating.
