Jump ahead a year: Injury healed, Souza's doctor gave him the go-ahead to resume riding a regular bicycle. Back in the saddle on his first ride, Souza felt uncomfortable in the standard hunched-over position. That tingling in his hands was back. Shoulders pinched. His head over the handlebars felt, well, awkward.

"After 100 yards, I turned and went home," he recalls. "I sold all three conventional bikes that I owned at the time."

He's been laid-back ever since.

I guess he found a new social group then.

Recumbent users often speak with evangelical fervor. But they also know the bike's design has limitations. Long-wheelbase bikes measure up to 7 feet, making them hard to transport on a rack. They steer differently. Hills are more challenging. And the price tag (a decent "starter" bike runs about $1,000) is steeper.

I don't know about the rest of you but I thought it odd that the headline mentions social suicide but the article does not even touch on it. No lines like:

"Souza used to have lots of upright cycle riding friends but after going to the dark side he lost them in his dust..." or something like that.

It doesn't. The headline reads: Easy Riders - Recumbent bikes are gaining popularity.

I find it is harder to talk to upwrong riders when stopped at the traffic lights, but often they will bend down to chat. They usually ask "is it comfortable riding that?' followed by "how do you steer?" - I have USS on by 'bent-bike

Possibly it relates to my reluctance to allow cookies to be harvested. I usually press "Don't Allow" without a second thought, unless it's a "must-have" site like banking etc. I've found it keeps my spam mails down to about 2-3 a week. And most of those are ones that I don't really mind getting.
