Great Ocean Road Action

I wonder if there was some sort of recumbent gathering on the Great Ocean Road around the 29-30th October? My wife and I spent a very pleasant two days staying in Apollo Bay and we noticed quite a few bikes passing through the area, with a very high preponderance of recumbents. I saw a Metaphysic, at least one Bacchetta, something that looked like the custom front wheel drive bike built by Steve Nurse and advertised on the Oz HPV site, as well as several others.

Weather was very pleasant for riding, although some riders looked to be doing it pretty hard on some of the long climbs in the area.

Twas the 4 yearly Audax GSR 1200. Open to recumbents and DF .
Of the recumbent riders:
Lavers hill and the hot weather put an early sweaty, dehydrated, end to most of us trying to complete the 1000 km trip, but Poit and Tom from the USA did an outstanding job of completing the 1200 km , which not only covered weather extremes but more than 13000 m of climbing.

Not to forget the volunteers who worked tirelessly and had less sleep than some of the riders over the 4 days of the event. Planning the event must have taken a huge effort as well.

Masochists.

Sounds like a great ride.

Suspected it might have been an Audax run, but no idea it was quite as extreme as a 1200. The riders we saw as we were driving out of Apollo Bay looked in pretty good shape, but we did see a few collapsed souls under what shade they could find by the side of the road as we were heading back later in the day.

Very impressed, although I have to agree with John L, you are all masochists :)

Haven't heard that one before. Must be an 'undocumented feature' of standard bikes?
