Rotovelo Across Australia (Perth - Sydney 2014)

Postby recumbenteer » Fri Mar 21, 2014 9:57 pm

G'day all,

Just a quick note to the 'Bent crowd, (and a shameless plug for support  )

I'm about to attempt a 'Ride Across Australia' in my Trisled Rotovelo, from Perth to Sydney. 8)

I've set up a blog if you're interested in what I'm up to.... (see link below) feel free to have a read.

Interest in my ride has also prompted me to fundraise for Legacy.

As I'm doing this as unpaid leave from work, any support for either Legacy or myself will be gracefully accepted. :)

So say "G'day" if you see me out on the tracks, getting my last few km's training, before I set off from Fremantle on Monday April 7, 2014.

regards,
Marky D. 8)

I'll be in town from April 3.

Hi Mark,
Good to see you have posted here.
I had posted your blog link and info in the Living with a Velomobile thread last night.

As I'm way down south of WA I won't have the chance to catch up as I doubt you will be coming this way.
All the best for the ride. I will be following with great interest.

Are you taking the Great Eastern Hwy to Norseman????
No way would I do that on a recumbent. I was touring on that 2 years ago and the comments I was getting from drivers about me being very visible vs the recumbent in front that numerous ppl found it hard to see.
Once you get past a certain town the verge vanishes and your riding on the lines and triple trucks are very common out there. I was going off road letting trucks go past every day.

G'day Baalzamon, The Great Eastern Hwy is the plan, but I've also searched the 'net and found there is a quieter route

https://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=205013749487860878203.00049c6635ec206212627&z=11&dg=feature

but I'm not sure if it's suitable for a Velomobile.

I hope you enjoy bumps..
The rail trail which I did today is littered with large pieces of blue metal which have been used in the past for the railway line. You would be seriously shaken in it as the lines are if lucky for 1 bike sometimes no clear line and have to take the brunt of the bumps. Also there are sections which you WILL NOT get the velomobile thru. It's tight enough for a touring bike to get thru. Further out on the kep track there is sand which you will love very much as horses have chopped it up. So it's lumpy and sandy. I did that yesterday and it wasn't fun in 34 degree heat.

If I was you I would head south as it's a more friendly route for a velomobile and have a few days extra tagged on. Sure it's more hilly but more sights to see as well. Great Eastern Hwy is boring.

I think the worst part of Great Eastern Hwy will be getting out of the city area and up past Greenmount hill. Once you get further out past Bakers Hill it isn't too bad. Plenty of people have ridden it.
I think that bright green Rotovelo will be different enough to be well and truly seen.

If things haven't changed much and truckies still use CBs then the first one that sees you will be passing the word along. That was our experience in Tazzie. We had handheld CBs and listened in.

Baalzamon....As "boring" as the Great Eastern Highway may be, lol... I think it will be my road of choice, (I'm not a fan of unsealed roads)and I don't have the time to tour south.....maybe next time.... :|

As John says, with plenty of trucks and traffic, it will make it entertaining, especially when word gets out of the "green jellybean" heading East. The Rotovelo gets noticed!

Bartek...I'm thinking of leaving from the Lighthouse on North Node Dr, Femantle, but haven't set a time as yet. Definitely morning,(8-9ish maybe) and I'll probably go SOR via paths to Applecross, into Perth, then out to Midland and the GE Hwy... I'm happy to have a send off crew if anyone's interested. 8) or leave earlier to suit the enthusiastic crowd

Maybe put a few green flashing super-bright LEDs around the back of the RV.
You don't need the best kit, you just need the best attitude.

Will we be able to follow via your Spot Tracker link?

I did see it back on your blog a while ago.

Perhaps you might repost the tracker link here.

Not long now.

Edit: Found your route pencilled in on your blog:

option one:- (which is my preference)
Adelaide - Mount Gambier - Great Ocean Road - Geelong - Dromana (Trisled factory) - Melbourne - Old Hume Highway - Wangaratta - Corryong - Jindabyne - Canberra - Goulburn - Old Hume Highway - Sydney.

option two:-
Mildura - Hay - Narrandera - Wagga Wagga - Goulburn - Old Hume Highway - Sydney.

If you come through Canberra there are probably some forum members who would share part of the ride with you if scheduling permits?

Good luck with it all and stay healthy.

Have fun Mark but I plan on avoiding you when you get back, at least until you stop going on about how awesome your trip was :D
