Performer Trike X, how does it perform?

Hi everyone I'm Joke from NZ

I'm looking to buy a recumbent trike. We don't have a lot of entry level models to choose from in NZ. One model that stands out to me is the PerformerTrike F. But it is a long way from where I live, so before I go to Look at it , I thougt there might be somebody on the forum to tell me the good and bad experiences with them.
I love long distance touring by bike. Amsterdam to Rome, Nice to Basil ect but my hands are protesting to much now, so I thought a trike might be a good thing. I would like to take it for another nice trip to Europe and also on some of the nice trails in NZ wich are often on a more rougher surface like lose metal , would the trike handle that. Any information would be greatly appreciated

To get the ball rolling WC I cant help with your targeted question but I would be searching out as many as you can to try because not one single recumbent feels tge same. They all handle differently and fit is something else. You may want to ask thjs same question also on bentriders larger bent base.

We have a pair of Trike Fs. Just to be clear, the Trike F is the folding version, the Trike X has suspension. The X would be more comfortable than the F but may weigh a little more.

I have had my Trike F for about two years and done a bit over 6000ks. The ride was pretty hard with the original narrow tyres at 100 psi. I now run wider tyres at lower pressure for more comfort. The frame, transmission (3x10 with bar-end shifters), brakes (cable operated disc) have all bee reliable. Only problem I've had have been accessories, in particular, mudguard mounts breaking.

I'm a bit slower up hill than I was on an upright bike, but my overall average speed is pretty similar. I average about 19-20 k/h, so I'm a bit on the slow side compared to younger riders.

I am looking for two budget level folding trikes to tour with panniers etc. We normally fly to our destination and the cycle leisurely for a few weeks.

The Performer Trike-F folds in half but is still pretty big, mainly because of the 26" rear wheel. I don't think it would fold small enough for flying. A couple of second hand Greenspeeds might be a better option. With quick-release removable front wheels they can be packed down quite small.

I'm still happy with my Performer and ride it most of the time. It is pretty good value for the price. The only reservation is that the longer wheel base models (Trike-F, Trike-E and Trike-X) seem to be a bit easier to tip over than other trikes.

I would certainly buy Performer again if something happened to my existing trike, but I'd probably get a JC20.

Being from South Africa importing or rather shipping could be an issue. Especially second hand as owners are not to keen to strap to a wooden pallet and ship. That's why I have not opted for a brand name secondhand.

If not for the shipping issue I would have chosen another. Also in South Africa there are very few recumbents. So no secondhand market.

BTW: If I get the F Trike it will be 20" all wheels.
